Besides Sandy having literally the perfect demeanor/composure for a transcon -- as well as being one hell of a determined athlete -- the two people who have been most-instrumental in her success are Cinder and Jay.
Cinder was contacted and came on board literally less than a week before the start of the transcon. She drives the RV, cooks all the meals, does all the laundry, gives Sandy massages, helps plan the routes, every single day.
Jay also came on-board at the last minute, dropping everything to be Sandy's ever-present "on the ground" crew. He drives the crew vehicle (i.e., the "clown car") and has been out on the road with Sandy for every mile. Every single one. He stops and crews Sandy somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 times a day (I am not exaggerating that number) to hand her bites to eat, stuff to drink, and anything else she may need.
For the last 45+ days, Jay has gotten up around 3:30 am, put in a 14-hr day with Sandy, and then he prepares the crew vehicle for the next day, and stays up for several hours to work on his real job, catches a few hours of sleep, and is at it again the next day.
Of course, Sandy has additional awesome people on her team, but the unquestioned nucleus of this effort is Sandy, Jay, and Cinder. As Jay told me while I was out there with them for a week in Iowa, their "bare-bones" crew "works because we really care about each other." Amen.
