This is insane!
How did sketchers manage to outbid Nike for this contract?! He's essentially forced himself out of Oregon / Portland with this move.
He's also a track runner, whose going to coach him?
Given he's probably the hottest property to come out of the NCAA system in years and has shown world class 'potential' I can't believe he's not gone with Nike and ended up in the NOP or Bowerman groups?
I assume Powell won't be allowed to continue coaching him post collegiately, so he must have been offered a massive contract to sign with sketchers!!

That's what many thought about him in terms of college.
Look what happened.
It's official.

Maybe he will do something. Maybe he won't. Still, it seems weird that Skechers would make him one of their very few paid athletes since I think it is unlikely that he will ever become a household name and will probably never reach the level of the top WCAP Kenyans (Chelimo/Leonard Korir) who are already Americans. Seriously, is his upside better than Jenkins at this point? -

He's already a household name among the small population that follows distance running. He is an NCAA legend. He will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Yes, he has more upside than Eric Jenkins and significantly more name recognition. -
Meh. I expect an extremely mediocre career from Cheserek on the international level. It's one thing to be good at the NCAA level, but the World stage is something else.
Despite what many have said the guy is not a household name by any means. -
$500,000 for 8 years is the word going around. Nike couldn't match that.

He wasn't just "good" at the NCAA level. He won 17 individual National Championships. His HS and NCAA career make Galen Rupp's (arguably the USA's top distance runner) look insignificant in comparison. -

per year? Or total?
Either one is a disgrace. If it's per year, that's RIDICULOUS (too high).
It it's total, that's too low although to be honest would be very high for a Kenyan with a 13:18 pb that dates to 2014. -

Found this in another thread.

The deal extends to 2024 to ensure at least one Olympic cycle if he does not get his citizenship by 2020. $3M is total deal (not including performance bonuses) and is for the 7-year period. A little over $400k/year for the most decorated collegian ever is quite a bargain. -
He is just another African to 99.99% of the population and 99% of the runners. Nike wasn't going to pay Galen Rupp money for him.

Great prediction. Any guesses of which state will be hit by a north korean missile first? -
I am guessing he is going the roads route because it would be extremely difficult to make the Kenyan team in Track. He doesn't have US citizenship yet so I am not sure if it's financially viable to focus on Track for the time being. Running roads, nationality doesn't matter as much.

Rupp was at 13:18 coming out of college. I don't see Cheserek going back to Kenya to compete. He has expressed a strong desire to stay here and compete for the USA. It may take awhile but that seems to be the desired goal. We'll see plenty of him in the USA. -
This is a quality deal for both sides. The amount is not that high for a 7 year period, so Skechers will get their money's worth. A lot of shoes will be sold, and Ed will bring Skechers to the track like Meb brought it to the road.
He can be a top 3 american 3000-10000m guy. There really isn't a lot of competition in that area. Other than Chelimo, everyone else is extremely beatable. -
His glory days are over. He'll probably go the way of Lawi. He's likely already 28 or so, and is completely used up from all the doubles/triples/running injured. At the end of it all, truly an incredible NCAA legend. I never would have predicted this ending, however.

Rupp had already made an Olympic team when he signed with Nike and was the favorite child of Cap/Alberto. Cheserek hasn't made any international teams and doesn't appear poised to through 2021. No way Nike would pay a guy who isn't going to compete at an international championship until 2023. The guy will be pushing 40 by then. -
THIS IS HILARIOUS!!!

Agreed. Really just bizarre.
Did Ches get other offers? Were they so bad?
It is impossible for me to shake the memory of watching 'Skechers' commercials on tv with stupid, awful shoes for kids. And I always forget this but the brand's spelling just annoys me to no end.
Will Cheserek get a shoe model? Will it have red flashing lights on the side?
Not that I've ever been in the position to choose but I feel like being able to run in quality shoes and having the backing of a proven brand and all the accompanying resources would be more attractive than a larger paycheck.
So weird. -

Dude, the go meb razors and the go run 5 are in the top 20 of best shoes of 2016 and 2017. I used to be adverse to skechers, because of its history of cheap, low quality shoes. However, after trying on a pair, and understanding that the running shoes are designed and conceptualized by runners, my perception has changed. A lot of quality runners line up at races with a pair skechers on . They are proven running brand at this point.
Samsung started off as a knockoff brand to Sony, and the brand was not only cheap, but none of their products were of quality. Now those roles have been reversed. Samsung is now a better brand than Sony.
