Good on you for working this summer; that is far more valuable to you then making summer sports practices. Kids today are now more than ever taking sports way too seriously; work experience is far more important (so long as it doesn't prevent you from doing your job - learning and getting good grades - during the school year).

There's plenty of time to do both. Even if working is more important, it doesn't have to preclude training hard and meeting all team obligations.

Part of the benefit of work experience is that it teaches skills like time management and planning. Demonstrate those skills by picking a job that allows you to be free at the necessary times and by managing both responsibilities.

You're obviously a pitiful f#cking specimen of a human being so let me educate you.Taking a sport seriously is the easiest way for any high schooler to experience and learn what it REALLY takes to be successful in this life. This is even more true when that sport is running. For many freshman in high school, running is the hardest thing, both mentally and physically, that they have ever done in their short, probably sedentary, lives. Done correctly, a true coach will teach his/her athletes about committing to a program to improve themselves, teach them integrity by requiring them to do the right thing out on runs when the coach isn't watching, teach them how to have grit and dig deep, even when they don't think they can, show them what sacrifice is and how it impacts their life down the road, and most of all, help the kids learn to discipline themselves so others don't have to.This little sh!tbag of an OP clearly needs all of the above. As for your "work experience", oh yeah. Showing them that you worked the drive through as Maccas will really tell them that you're ready for a big time job, way more than showing them you were all-state in cross country or track/field, got a scholarship to run in college, and did all of that while maintaining good grades and doing a summer internship.F#cking muppet

And by the way, he could have taken the top 10 from the time trial and you still wouldn't be going. As far as the coach can see, you have already quit.

So summer is roughly 100 days and you made 3? Yeah you already quit so you don't need to.

About fifteen years ago, I took over a girls HS XC team (I was already the track coach). There was a pretty good amount of raw talent there, but they hadn't been very successful (ninth in a 16 team regional the year before). The returning number 3 (20:20 the year before) decided she was "too busy" to go to camp with us the first week of the season and once the season started, kept making excuses why she had to miss one of two practices a week (work, choir practice, etc.)

On the other hand, a girl on the team who had run 22:30 the year before ran more over the summer than she ever had in her career while working a job and participating in marching band practices. She would also pick up other girls in her car to take them running with her (guess who got elected captain).

Returning number three slowly rounded into shape and ended up being our number 6 at a dual meet in late September after being 8-9 in the previous few meets. That Friday, she decided to skip practice because singing the national anthem at the boys' soccer game was more important. On Saturday morning, she showed up to catch the bus for our invite that day and couldn't believe I had the nerve to tell her she was running JV that day. She swore at me in front of the entire team and quit on the spot.

Our team captain got the team together and said they could do better without the girl who quit. The real team (the ones who were there day and day out instead of when it was convenient for them) bonded and started improving. A month later, the team finished third in our region and 19th at the state meet.

If your job was a higher priority, fine. That is your choice. You were rewarded with a paycheck for your efforts. However, your teammates chose to make XC a priority and their reward is coming in the fall.

Here's what you do:

You practice very hard and make it so you're very valuable to the team. Then in the meet your team needs you most (districts, states, whatever..) THEN QUIT.

sounds like working is an excuse. If you cared enough you'd get the runs in. can't possibly work too many hours in a day as a high school student to not run

You hurt my feelings with this. I would rather run. My parents made me get a job. I went to practice when I could, which was 3. Practice was Tuesday, Thursday, Saturdays. I only wanted to talk to the principal because I talked to the coach and he didn't seem to care. It's not my fault my parents made me work. I wanted to run more but I worked 8 hour shifts and was really tired after or it was late and my parents wouldn't let me run. I don't want to quit but felt like it after all this. Thanks for the possitive replies. To you above you're a jerk.

Your situation has zero similarities to the OP's. Your church camp and vacation are all optional activities you choose to do. Do you work at the camp, or just attend it? Your preacher won't fire you for missing an hour of volunteering because of a time trial.Moreover, you aren't a top 5 runner. (Are you even top 7? This feels like a case of self-identifying as fast.) Nobody would notice or care if you quit.

Did he tell the team he will use the top 7 from TT BEFORE the TT? If he did not, I would complain to the principal. That would be against you personally, clearly.

2. The coach does not like winning or trying to succeed. If you are that good, he should not cut you from camp and cause problem.

3. He is discriminating against you for economic reasons IF your job is not really optional and / or you really need the money to survive or pay for necessities. If it is extra spending cash to blow, not a huge factor.

4. You are being cut from the camp, not the team. Who cares. You can kick tail later. This is some HS level drama dood. Yeah, camp is fun. it is not the end of your season.

5. Pay back. If running success doesn't matter to you, run hard, kick tail all season, then, when he needs to USE YOU for your points, at the championship race, don't show up and tell him.......................... you had to work and tell him this decision was based on him not making THE CAMP. Touche!

Last year was last year. Sorry buddy having a summer job is not an excuse you could have run before or after work and still had been ready for your time trial.

Oh, c'mon Johnny Utah...that's so cliche. Didn't Bodie say "life sure has a sick sense of humor?" Coaches can make life more fair for these younsters who are trying to earn some dough in the summer. They make concessions all the time for HS kids in some of the other more popular team sports (e.g., football). When I played HS football decades ago this situation came up a lot. Some of our top starters had work commitments all summer and couldn't make any summer weight sessions or informal practices. But coaches back then didn't penalize the kids. More letsrun dribble. I worked 8 hours, went to school and ran, EVERY day. My friend's Dad is blind, he's had double knee replacement and...life is what you make it. What on Earth can you gain from going to camp if you don't have time for the regular practices?

Does anyone gain anything from a camp apart from maybe overtraining?
