Sounds like a great coach who is trying to set a tone that cross country is serious. If you played soccer and coach said he was only taking starters to a camp, you would be at all the summer sessions.

OP, ignore the snarky comments above. I'm going to try to lay this out simply.

Good on you for working this summer; that is far more valuable to you then making summer sports practices. Kids today are now more than ever taking sports way too seriously; work experience is far more important (so long as it doesn't prevent you from doing your job - learning and getting good grades - during the school year).

As for CC camp, I suggest that you pursue neither of your suggestions. Just let your coach and the top 7 time trail finishers go - no need to get angry. Now is the time to finish your summer of working, get your running in before/after work, and show up and enjoy CC season once the actual season starts. If you have a chip on your shoulder, fine - just let that motivate you. (I'd make a comment about running in pure hate, but that would be too predictable.)

Sounds like you have a great Coach, who treats everyone fair! It is 2017, does not matter what you did in 2016. He is rewarding the Boys who put the work in this summer and more than likely , you knew what the expectations were going into the summer!

In your coach's eyes maybe he feels you have already quit. The summers around here are pretty long. 9-10 weeks I'd guess. That's what 60-70 days you should of been running. Out of those days you made it to 3 crucial practices. At those practices you didn't explain your work schedule to your coach. What is he to think besides you did not put in a good effort.

He has every right to take who he wants to a camp. He made a good choice making his decision as performance based as possible. I know I'd be pissed if I ran with my team all summer and he took you over me. Chances are this is just a troll since anyone that put in your the effort this summer would not find a running forum to tear up on.

Here is what I'd do. I would not talk to the principle. I'd be afraid the principle would laugh at me for whining about such things. I would not quit either. I would work my butt off the week my friends and teammates are at camp. I'd probably do a hard run every other morning while they were gone. I'd run easy the other days and run an easy 5 miles at night every night.

I'd hope that was enough to get me back in shape to be the #2 runner when the season starts. I'd actually feel upset with myself for letting everyone down with the poor shape I was in at the start of the season. I'd apologize to your coach also and ask for forgiveness.

That's ridiculous...get your parents invovled, complain to the school board, make a stink!(everyone else does in situations like this involving some of the more popular sports in HS, e.g., football).

Your coach has no compassion or understanding with your situation. It's not like you were goofing off all summer...you were working, trying to earn some dough - something your coach doesn't seem to empathize with. Some of these stinking HS coaches have no compassion with some of the problems teens face these days! 😔

The problem now is that you've likely outed yourself to your coach because he probably visits this site.

I hope it doesn't irreparably damage your relationship with him.

For the record, I sympathize with you having grown up poor and working every summer.
