Oh my gosh, the girls hugging at the end reminded me of Edwin Moses and Mike Shine, Montreal Olympics......
Congrats to Emma - Gold, and Courtney- silver with that big personal best time.

Of course you did not know who would win. You also knew that Chepkoch would screw up and hand the gold to Coburn? Not only are you a racist but you are a liar.
I agree. Emma is going to be 2nd or 3rd on the USA steeplechase ranking by next year. At the latest 2019 she will no longer reign in the USA.

I love it!!
With a few laps to go, there was a side shot of four Kenyans plus Emma cruing along single file. Suddenly Courtney pops into the shot behind Emma and I was like "WTF!"

That was insane..Frerichs was so gutsy...shocked!!!
It was Frerichs pushing for the lead on the backstretch that set up Emma's big inside move on the water jump. What a race.

I feel that somehow that race makes up for the frustration and disgust I felt when Gatlin (and to a lesser extent Farrah) won their respective races. [quote]Payday! wrote:

I should be giddy, but I keep lamenting that this headline is now no longer available on April 1st.

Why is he racist for cheering Coburn?

Even though Coburn had medaled just last year (Krause had done so previously), and run 9:07, to run 9:02 after rounds, set the championship record, and defeat a host of runners who had gone much faster is stunning. Jager, as the best steepler of the year prior to this race, showed how difficult it is to front run even the last few laps and not be crushed in the kick. That Frerichs, a very good college talent but only a 9:19 steepler prior to this race, also went under the cr while getting silver is astonishing. Better steeple form obviously helps overcome lesser flat 3k/5k ability, but it had not made nearly enough a difference in previous races. As for the quality of the field, this field was by far the strongest it has ever been. It has risen markedly in quality the past few years. How to explain it? Cooler weather aids non-Africans in championships, longer championship period and more stringent testing make the drugs less effective because they stop usually a week for the races but might have to stop longer before champs, too much racing on the DL starting too soon, with too much travel (Dubai, Shanghai, Pre, Europe, and then all the flying back to Kenya or Ethiopia right after races means a lot of travelling), and finally the possibility of bad national training camps for Kenya in particular where they often don't have their coaches handling their training could all be reasons that they have been underperforming and more Europeans and Americans medaling.

I also think the Women's Steeple times have been weak compared to the flat 3k/5k. Sometimes the biggest barriers are mental, so once Jebet and others started pushing the times down, is there any surprise that Coburn and others would follow?
Think of it this way, the top men's steeplers are running 1-2 seconds per lap slower than their 5k potential. Would anyone be shocked for Coburn or Frerichs to go run 14:50 for 5k? 14:45?
Any idea why Emma's training partner, Aisha Praught, was DQ?
The question is whether the Kenyans will actually start working on their barrier technique?
The real question is where can I see this race? It's really a detriment to our sport that a quick replay isn't available and the full races aren't available anywhere online!
