Only 2 Canadian Finalists in the history of WC (before today). So I would say, never.
Yeah they will both finish in the last half of the finishers.
Participant ribbons for them both
Super impressed by Knight. He ran that heat with a lot of maturity and had a great last 200m.
I like both their chances for a medal, and gotta say I'm very impressed by all the young runners. The Eritreans, Ethiopians, especially.

you realize Ahmad was 4th at the olympics last year right? I say better than 8th.
Weirdest style I have ever seen that is world class. He always looks like he is fighting to stay with the leaders and is running near maximum capacity.TWN wrote:

Cam Levins at his best looked more easy flowing but the results speak for themselves.

No, they won't.
Did you see where there seed times place them?
Medal? Omg.....you Canadians are bigger homers than we are.

Meh, I guess it's something, but Canada's performance has been awful at the WCs. Without Degrasse, no chance at a 4 x 100 medal either.
Think the only legit shot at a medal is Warner in Decathlon.
Really a stinker for athletics Canada.

He meant they wouldn't be in the back half. He wasn't implying they would medal...
I wonder what the All White Male Distance Runner Fraternity (AWMDRF) is saying about this. I would love to be a fly on the wall when they get together and talk openly and honestly about their true feelings. (actually I don't care really).
They keep their running clubs all white, same as in hockey or other 'Canadian' sports. Since that is the only way they can win.
But alas! All the best runners emerging from the great 'white north are non-white: Justin Knight, Mo Ahmad, Yves Sikubwabo, Declan White, Ehab El-Sandali, Brandon McBride etc.
The last time a member of the AWMDRF won a medal the Olympics was . . . (drum roll please) in 1964. An 800m runner.
Do the math: that is over half a century ago. But don't worry, the AWMDRF will continue to keep their clubs in Canada all white. They will also continue to claim on trackie.ca that they are the champions for the rights of all minorities.
Does anyone have a vomit bag?
(a little more I wanted to say about this, sorry for two posts in a row)
The reason Mo Ahmed’s recent 13:01 5000m Canadian record is not getting much attention is because he is a non-white guy in a country where long distance running is white dominated sport.
Since he is originally from Somalia, most white Canucks don't recognize him as being truly Canadian. Which is nonsense because all white people came to Canada from Europe. Everyone with a Canadian passport is a Canadian as far as I am concerned.
If Mo Ahmed was a white guy with Irish ancestry and a name like Chris Mc-something, or Shane O’something, I can guarantee you his record would be a national headline. Macleans magazine would do a cover story about it.
Heck he won a gold medal at the 2015 Pan-American games and got almost no recognition for it.
The IAAF has recognized that this issue pervades not just Canada, but America and Europe also. Because the sport of distance running is mostly dominated by African runners, the ratings have declined. Even at the Olympics the stands were mostly empty when Bekele won the 10,000m in 2004 and again in 2008.
Think back to the 1970’s when white Americans like Steve Prefontaine and Frank Shorter were doing well on the international scene. What a running boom it created in North America.
Also think back to the 1980’s when a runner from England named Graeme Fell immigrated to Canada and later broke the Canadian record in the 3000SC by running 8:12. He was fully embraced as a Canadian.
Now? . . . mostly its Africans from rural villages in poor third world countries. That is why the IAAF gave protected status to Mo Farah in 2010 and allowed him to juice himself to the max. Interestingly he is also from Somalia, but because he competes for Great Britain, they figured he could be marketed as a European athlete. What an incredible result that produced. London Olympic stadium was packed with a standing crowd that cheered him on the entire way in both the 5000m and 10,000m races. Both of which he won gold in.
P.S. On the female side, the great white hope for the IAAF is 200m sprinter Dafne Schippers.
Ya weird style,?!.....runs just like hat Farah guy!! Which seems to be working out just fine.

All I can say BlimeyMate, is what an erudite and focused response.
One of them needs to win gold in honor of Terry Fox
Huge Mo Ahmed fan here. Really hoping he and Justyn can crack the top 6, with a medal for Mo!I take issue with two points below. When Sully was setting National Records in the mile, or Jeff Scheibler breaking the men's 10,000m record, the events were not national headline news. They were not featured in Maclean's cover stories. I believe you that there's a problem with racism in Canadian track and field (although I haven't lived at home or been involved in track there for years). But your point here is specious at best: the overwhelming reason Mo's record isn't getting much ink is because track is a marginal sport. If racism is also a factor, its impact here likely is minor compared to the overwhelming lack of interest in the sport overall. Graeme Fell may have been "fully embraced" as a Canadian, whatever that means. But to suggest he was welcomed with open arms by everyone in the track community is far from the truth. There were many people irritated by his arrival on the scene, bitter that he emigrated from a country where he was an elite in a highly-developed distance running tradition to a country where he could be a top dog right away.
