Why is Colleen Quigley disqualified for stepping on the line during her 3k Steeple race but Mo was not when he stepped off the track during his 10k?
Mo was pushed/tripped over the line, Quigley stepped on it on her own. I don't agree with the ruling, but that is why

I'm with you. They are asking for these type of touch infractions.
You wouldn't want it in the water but once the jumps is over. Yes, there should be a rail.
Here is the infraction.
https://twitter.com/letsrundotcom/status/895355295718928384She finished 3rd in heat #1 and there were auto qualiiers but she's been given a quick DQ.
But she's been DQd. I was wondering if she came too inside on the water jump and it looks like that was the case.

4362 Colleen QUIGLEY USA DQ
Update: Here is the infraction.
USATF tweet just a minute ago:
After video review, Quigley did step on the line on the curve & gained advantage. Video referee upheld ruling on the field. DQ stands.
The appeal would be easier if she hadn't stepped on the line three separate times.
But no DQ for Jager who did the same thing... hmmm

She definitely stepped on a straight line which is part of the curve in that last lap.
How is a straight part of a curve? If her next step was back in bounds and not yet in the curve, then she actually ran more, not less.
Am I crazy?

I thought the rule was that on the straight, you only got DQed for multiple consecutive steps out or if you gained an advantage.
Yes. That's what I thought too.
4. An athlete shall not be disqualified if he
(a) is pushed or forced by another person to step or run outside his lane or on or inside the kerb or line marking the applicable border, or
steps or runs outside his lane in the straight, any straight part of the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump or outside the outer line of his lane on the bend,
with no material advantage thereby being gained and no other athlete being jostled or obstructed so as to impede his progress.
Never mind -- now USATF is saying she stepped on the line in an actual curve.
Exactly. Did y'all not watch the race? She literally stepped on the line 4 times on the straight and then on the curve. It is unfortunate but also a clear infraction.

Does this rule apply even if you're blonde and a former model though?!

disqualified for running outside her lane.
tsk tsk
behave yourself and play inside the rules
No advantage gained, the judges should be allowed to use some judgement. This ticky tack call will make the sport more dangerous as all runner will crowd to the outside over the Water Jump.
Same deal as Kemboi at the Olympics last year so this DQ had to stand as well.
Tracks need to model after Hayward for steeple pits on the inside of the track: use a rail and an angle that isn't so extreme.
Friend joked it's almost a right angle getting back to the track.
Ratings for the women's steeple just took a hit in the key demographic of men aged 12-100.

She didn't do that. I have a video of it. She stepped on it once.

I agree. I think they'll argue there was no advantage gained by Jager. Quigley had passed a few people before the jump.
Total BS. Stupid rule.
It's like the norovirus. Let's use some common sense.
It just doesn't seem to be in the spirit of sport.
I don't see an advantage.

Exactly. She stepped on the very outside corner of the line. This is absolute BS. She did not gain any advantage. It's not like she stepped outside the line. What a shame for her and BTC.

+1
I ran the steeple enough times, and every college track that I recall had a rail on the inside of the track. If you are going to be that trigger happy to DQ any fit that grazes the line, you just HAVE to put a rail there.
Also... USATF not filing an appeal? WTF? Did Salazar give them the dirty look?
