Hill, though. Smart - stayed out of the pushing and kicked for an auto Q.
Hill ran that perfectly. Avoid the bull for 4700m, and then go around everyone to bruised themselves during the race.
Menjo only 16th. Rutto is the only Kenyan in the final.
Barega is only 17?
is that possible?
or is it east-african 17, aka 19-20?
Barega 13:21. Pretty fast for a heat. Also not bad considering the weather. Chelimo made it as fastest loser. It is impressive to get back up after falling to qualify. This weather is awful.
I think Chemilo will repeat his U.S trial strategy in the final after that. No way he will want to run in the pack again
I'm not saying he didn't run smart here, but he always seems to get gapped in the final laps and give himself extra work on the final lap
Good qualification from Butchart.
How did Tiernan go from getting destroyed in the 10000m to an auto Q in the 5000m?

Only if he wants to get crushed.
I think the fall was Chelimo's fault.
Packed it in from a ways out in the 10k. Saved it for the 5. Same thing Ahmed did last year in Rio once he knew it was going to be a bad one.

Agreed. He was looking at the screen, doing the math, and ran up the back of the guy in front of him.

Was just gonna say that. He would get dusted on the last lap
Who knew that distance running was a full contact sport? That 5000m was pretty brutal. Maybe they should start running that event in lanes the whole way, like the 400m. LOL.

Hard to know if that fall was his fault, but he was running erratically. Cram said on the braodcast about running with some track discipline, holding your line and not jumping out. Chelimo had it in his head to stay in the top 5 places, and did everything he could to get in front when he slipped too far back. Didn't matter if they were 2000m into the race, he cut across the pack several times to get outside, or to get from the outside and tucked in.
Not smart running.

I love races like that, TBH.
Who was pushing Chelimo first when he threw his hands up?
Was it Menjo who caused Chelimo to fall, then went down behind him?
Also why was Butchart smiling and gesturing like "wtf" at Chelimo on the final straight? Was Chelimo trying to push him to outer lanes for 8/9 place?

Just make it individual time trial. No more sit and kick.
Chelimo qualified
that was an impressive "I'm not giving up", glad he made it
