Yes all in all somewhat disappointing. From a coaching perspective one would question whether US 800m runner's are doing enough volume to get through heat, semi's and finals. For many countries the results were less than impressive. I still shake my head at the fact that the Aussie 800m record is now almost 50 years old and their best athlete ran 1:49 at London.
The Aussies have overall been very disappointing. It's the largest contingent to qualify ever, 60+ I think. However they have not performed. Not sure how much the dual peak has to do with it.
Mens 400 - Solomon, went too hard early, dies, didn't make it out of the heat
womens 1500 - 2/3 were well below their best, Zoe Buckman made the semis and just missed the final, which is performing at about her level
womens 10km - both Aussies disappointing
Mens 10km - Tiernan disappointing
Mens 800 - disappointing
Mens 110H - Hough 5th in heat, close to season best, did ok
womens 400 - the stunning Morgan Mitchell didn't run as good as she looks
womens 400H - Wells disappointing after great summer form
Womens jav - Roberts auto qualifier, Mitchell poor, so 1/2
womens PV - Parnov had to basically = her season's best to make the final, did OK
Mens LJ - both Aussies close to form, Lapierre 11th in the final
Mens shot - Birkenhead disappointing
Mens discus - both Aussies disappointing, esp Ben Harradine
Mens PV - Kurt Marschall made it through
Who is to come? Gregson and Sally Pearson, + the walkers, + Dani Samuels + Gen La Caze. Oh - and a gun 17yo female 200 runner, who won Commonwealth Youths in Bahamas. She's drawn the lane inside Schippers for the heat - welcome to Semniors.
So far - by my count 20 competed
- 0 above expectation/PR
- 7 at about expectation/season's best
- 13 below expectation
