She's in her prime for the marathon, and Shalane is at the point where she is closing out a successful career. I think it was better for Amy that Shalane wasn't in the race, she didn't hold back or trail behind the team "lead" to fall in line.

CONGRATULATIONS AMY!!!!! YOU ROCK!
I am soooo sooooo happIiiiiiiEEeeeeee for you!
Bravo, Amy! Super proud of her. She also seems like a really genuine person to boot. She can cherish this great effort forever.
In another thread, I predicted that Cragg was bronze potential. Her running style is ideally suited to the marathon.
Over the years of track meets at Dempsey/UW, I got to meet and talk to a great many runners in their college years. Of all of them, my two favorites were Chris Solinsky and Amy Hastings (now Cragg). Two genuine, down-to-earth, plain great people. So good to see her success a decade later.
That's why you always send everyone to a championship who qualifies. By PRs Cragg was not in the top 10 and would not have been picked to medal or be in the top 8. If she was Canadian, South African, etc she would have been watching the race on TV. Since she's American, the US put her on the team and the US picked up another medal.
There's a reason you run the race and don't just compare form charts.
Fabulous run, although I have to admit I was pulling for Alyson Dixon due to her gutsy her solo effort.
I missed it because I was at a race this morning, anyone have a clip of the last little bit?
The marathon recap has been updated:
Here it is. The last shot of cragg before this one she was in fourth by a good 10-20 meters. She apparently kicked with about 600 to go and the result was that when the camera came back to her she was suddenly in third. It was very exciting to watch.
she got pretty close to silver. amazing.
Very inspiring! She can dig DEEP!

Why is it gutsy to run faster than you are capable of finishing for the sole reason of getting a lot of camera time?

She seems like a sweet gal in that interview.
I'm in awe of Amy. Placed 4th in 2012 Marathon Olympic Trials, and I can imagine the thoughts running through her mind. All the work, and heartache and sacrifice up to that moment, so close, but no.
Then, that she would have to wait four long years for just another chance to make the team. Most here know the difficult journey it would be over the course of 4 years for any runner seeking that goal. Yet, in 2016, she WINS the Olympic Trials. Now, 1st WC medal in 34 years.
THIS is what it takes, not speed, or shoes, or sponsors, but sheer determination, perseverance by the acre, and guts.

Not disagreeing with your impression of Cragg's guts and determination, but she didn't have to wait 4 years after missing out on the marathon team in 2012. She only had to wait a few months, as she won the 10000 on the track at the 2012 Olympic Trials, making the 2012 team in that event.

The boys who have a problem with her are NOP fanboys.
Just managed to watch the replay without knowing the results. Wow, did not expect that from Amy. Great race all around.
INCREDIBLE run from Amy! She didn't listen to the oddsmakers or the know-it-alls, just did the hard work in training and put it all out there on race day. And raced SMART. I am so happy and so inspired by her! This medal was a long time coming for her and she earned every bit of it. I was fortunate to meet her briefly in Boston 2014, and she is a very kind and humble person. Can't wait to see her future accomplishments, CONGRATS AMY!!!!
