I think doping for sports is in its own category though. It shouldn't warrant jail time because well, even if the IOC or IAAF or WADA deems those drugs illegal, does the FDA view them illegally as well?
Bodybuilders can take steroids and not go to jail. Runners can take steroids too. Should they go to jail if they get caught?
It isn't the FDA that druggies should worry about, it is the DEA. If someone is using prescription drugs without a prescription written specifically for them, that falls under the jurisdiction of the DEA.
If I recall, Alberto Salazar was experimenting with different doses of drugs on his son in order to chart what levels they could use without getting busted. What drug(s) were they using? I can't believe that the DEA didn't at least check that out. If they were prescription drugs, then jail time might have been the result.
