While I don't condone violence, I do think he got screwed over. How does Ethiopia ALWAYS select its team? By seasonal best time.
Beyo is the third fastest Ethiopian steepler on the year.
This year, Ethiopia held a trials race in Hengelo. He was third in their trials race in Hengelo.
Men
3000 m steeple 11 June
1 Getnet Wale ETH 8:12.28
2 Tafese Soboka ETH 8:13.22
3 Chala Beyo ETH 8:13.24
4 Diriba Tesfaye ETH 98 8:13.33
5 Hailemariyam Amare ETH 8:17.83
6 Takele Nigatu ETH 99 8:20.76
Who thinks we should start a go-fund me for him? It amazes me how federation after federation - no matter where they are in the world - just do as they seemingly please.
PS. I changed the title of the initial thread. It was initially entitled, "Chala Beyo attacks coach after not making the Ethiopian worlds team"
I liked the original title better.

You're joking right? Start a go-fund me for him? That is nuts. You're telling me you're going to send a guy some money because he punched out his coach and lost his job?
His response was not acceptable behavior.
The punishment (no running for 2 years) may be harsh, but the proper response isn't to give the guy money.
Plus you hate go fund me. Youcaring.com doesn't charge fees. If anything that's what you'd start.

I agree we shouldn't give him money, but how does he get a 2-year ban for punching someone? That's a ridiculous punishment. He got in a fist fight, not caught shooting up EPO.
I'd like to know more though because there isn't a lot of info here.
1) Why would he punch his coach after not making the team? Did his coach help choose the team?
2) I'm assuming his coach is an official Ethiopian Federation coach. If Sifan Hassan punched Alberto Salazar I doubt the Ethiopian Federation would care.
3) Is Chala Beyo banned from all competition, or just Ethiopian national events? I don't think they should have the jurisdiction to ban him from all international races where he's running unattached (rather than on an Ethiopian team) for a non-doping issue.

Hassan is a Dutch runner, so the Ethio Feds have no power over her. Also wanna add Ethiopia is going thru a bad political problem right now, so I wonder if that has anything to do with his not being selected. And if Bekele is actually refusing to represent Ethiopia.
T.I.A.
Beyo will be a fine steepler for Bahrain in the future.
Rojo, why did you change the original thread title? It was better.
Also, what would a go fund me accomplish?

The fund would allow him to eat. The thing says he can't compete at all. I don't how you can tell someone you can't do your profession for two years simply because you punched someone.
If he's banned from just Ethiopian champs, I could sort of understand it but would like to get more info.
The punishment doesn't fit the crime. It's like the opposite of what happens in the US.
John Capriotti threatened to kill Danny Mackey and nothing happened to him. He's still in charge of endorsements at Nike for t&f.

Ethiopian selectors seems top be a headcase year after year. But this one could be a positive surprise.
They added Tesfaye Deriba, who was 4th in the trials and born in 1999, but his IAAF profile lacks of further data of his birthdate, or annual progression. It could be one of many cases of rural/farm boys with zero track background, like Dennis Kimetto.
The fact is, he was entered in Hengelo with a 8:27.70 PB, and improved massively to 8:13. So, probably the Ethiopian Comitee thinks that this "junior athlete" have more potential than Chala Beyo, who's 3 years older.
Furthermore, this year he was entered to the Djibouti internacional meeting (in March), with 8:44.27 as his listed PB or SB, so perhaps he improved almost 31 seconds in 4 months.
Haile really cleaning things up :-}
Has anyone seen Chala Beyo ? He looks to be 100 lbs with the muscle tone of a broomstick.
The coach who was punched should have snapped the angry stick figure in half. Must be like getting hit by a third grade girl.
First of all violence is not acceptable. The coach is in a hospital. It's unbelievable.
Not sure what you are referring to bad politics. It has nothing to do with politics.
I just listened to interviews by Haie and Kenenisa regarding the incident. Haile is so furious. Kenenisa said his fitness at the time is not that great. He didn't complain. He agreed with the selection process.

Almost everythingyou wrote is a lie and u know it. Not sure what political problem as if you don't know, what about the Rio marathon. The Ethiopian government must be doing a good job of keeping people quite, including murdering protesters. Provide a link to the interview, if it does exist.
He didn't make the final in the Olympics. He should have seen this coming.

Do you mean Girma Diriba that ran the 2000m steeple at the Wu18s in Nairobi?

Oh duh, yeah I posted that too quick and didn't give enough thought to that example (Hassan transferred allegiance from Ethiopia to the Netherlands in 2013). Thanks for catching that.
... So if Mo Aman punched Mark Rowland back when he was on OTC.
