When the records are broken the medals will still shine.
Records fade away medals last forever.

Yawn. Who cares.
Webb:
- Never made a Olympic final
- Never places higher than 8th in a WC final
- 1 Golden league win
- 3 time USATF 1500 champ
- ran some pretty awesome times
- Current HS mile record
- Current US mile record
Centro:
- Olympic champ
- 4th place at Olympics
- 2 time placer at WC (Silver and Bronze)
- World Indoor Champ 1500
- 4 time USATF 1500 champ
- ran pretty good times
I know which career I'd rather have had. Now, I might have taken Webb's if he placed at some WC or had more Golden League wins or high placings. If it's just bad luck at the olympics, then ok. But, essentially, Webb sucked in important races.

Its not just Centro. No HUMAN on the planet has run a faster mile than Webb since Webb set the AR.
How many times do they run the mile every year?
How many times do they run the 1500?
How many 1500's have be faster or equivalent to Webb's mile? Not a lot, but people have run faster over an equivalent distance.
Centro is head and shoulders above Webb as a tactician. What you had to love about the races where Webb was at the top of his game was that he would go with any pacers anywhere and explode for the win if anyone was still with him the last 100m. He had the emotion. It was actually exciting to watch the 1500 and especially the mile in his era. No American miler has ever had the championship record of Matthew Centrowitz, Jr. and who knows when anyone will ever match it. Olympic gold for the first time since 1908. World indoor gold. World bronze and silver. Plus, a very narrow 4th in London 2012.
Web was indeed great.
He beat Lagat a couple times in '07 but not when it mattered most. Too bad about the injury. He would have garnered a medal, yes? Perhaps gold. You could say he mis-timed his peak I suppose.
The thing I don't quite get: The CULT OF WEB. Sure he was great, but the devotion is odd.
