When I was younger and running much faster I really didn't pay any attention to hobby/joggers as I was focused on my performance. By the time I was in my mid 30s I was trying to break 18 min. at a meet. I saw a guy about my age and asked him if he was going to break 18. He looked at me and with a decidedly English accent said something to the effect of, "I should certainly say so." Well excuse me, I thought. The gun went off and I didn't see him again. The next day in the newspaper there was a picture of him winning the race in the low 15s. After praising his performance it pointed out that he was far from the high 13 min. which he ran representing Great Britain in the Olympics a decade or so before. I then knew why he answered me in that manner. To his perception not breaking 18 would be like walking the entire race.
