The fastest 1600 guy that I overlapped with in HS was a soccer player that only ran track his Jr/Sr year I think. Ran about 4:14, placed at the IL state meet. He had a twin brother that was just as athletic and also played soccer, but the brother played volleyball in the spring.
Those guys probably would have been our best XC runners too, but they were playing soccer. The twin brother would have been a good miler but he never ran track. Runners really need to need to accept that plenty of top level athletes in other sports are probably decently fast. We're not consistently attracting the top athletes.
