Nike will make their money back on the guy in no time at all. You think they - Nike - really cares about Webb or seeing him develop as a runner? I say no. What they want to do is sell shoes. Webb - much like Pre - is a God among HS runners.
How long do you think it will take Nike to come out with Zoom Webb's? I say it will be the biggest seller when it comes out right around Christmas. They will not be able to keep the stores stocked.
Sure they care if he gets better...if he does they sale lots of shoes for many years...
they need to be creative with this one...the Zoom Webb-slinger...red and white and blue with webbing throughout...
SHOE COMPANIES LOSE MONEY SELLING TRACK SPECIALTY EQUIPMENT...Webb can't help Nike out in that department no matter how fast he runs.
Umm...why would they sell track equipment if they were losing money? I'd think that they would stop after 20-30 years of losing money in that department.
They still develop track ranges because, soem body who buys a nike spike is more likely to buy a nike trainer, nike tracksuit, nike shorts, vest, bag etc... its about brand loyalty. Its also about credibility, if all Nike made were the silver coated over worked street shoes that you see so much of they would just be a fashion company, they need to innovate in terms of performance to give there products credibility.
Even if technically that were true, those people still head to the store and then perhaps buy some other things too, so perhaps it at a minimum is a loss leader (like in some states grocery stores can sell milk for under cost to get people into the store). If making "track stuff" had no positive at all, Nike wouldn't do it. They aren't in business to be nice to a few people who want track spikes.
