My error, posted on pg 1 of this thread. Hunter's race Sunday was a mere 1.62 second PR (improvement on a 3:38.39 earlier in this outdoor season), not 3.58 secs. Still not too shabby!

no he isn't, and I don't get why people say this. He turned 18 on September 5th of his senior year, which puts him just after the cutoff for the majority of the states (as of 2015 31 states had cutoffs of September 1st or earlier). That puts him at the very old end of the "normal age", but definitely in the range.

it's all superficial, no runner thinks about how old they are when they run, if anything being in high school only made him slower. Probably would've ran 3:54 indoor for all we know.

Hunter was hardly THAT old in HS for his grade. In today's

world there are tons of kids born after 9/1 that start a bit late aAnd are 18 and 8 ,months+ old or so when they graduate. Way more than back in "boomer" era.

Also, this was Willis' second race and a huge focus to get Q standard, so....

He has one more shot in Monaco.

Decent time, but he's going to have run 3:31 or better to be competitive on world circuit. That's just the cold, hard truth.

Two thoughts:

1. The average winning time for a rabbited international 1500 is probably 3:33, so you definitely don't need to run 3:31 to be competitive on world circuit.

2. The path to 3:31 goes straight through 3:36, usually around age 20.

Good point, you're right. He's not progressing fast enough.

Same for Jakob. An 8:26 steeple is simply not competitive on the world stage.

Both Hunter and Jakob need to step it up (and soon).

Seems to track Willis to 1200 then abruptly gets up to Souleiman. Definitely more pace there with a smoother last lap.

You 100% most do need to be able to run 3:31 on the International circuit to be competitive. And by competitive I mean battle for wins in any race that means anything.

How many DL races are won by guys without a 3:31 PR?

There is a nice profile of hunter in the Washington Post. I've started another thread on it.

The word on the street is that all the distance races will be slower because of the upgraded drug testing, even among the African countries. The Russian ban scared a lot of people and many have backed off the illegal stuff and are attempting to run clean. Clean fields make Drew Hunter's 3:36.77 and 3rd place looks a lot better.
