It is not called a marathon, brojos. It is mount marathon.
Today Allie O defeated Morgan Arritola, who was the 2015 US Mountain Trail champion and has had several big wins so far this year, although she apparently skipped the US Mtn Champs last month.
Allie O also won the 2015 Junior World Trail championship, and has experience at top-level trail racing. She may be even better on the trails which require more than just a big engine. Maybe she will be one of the few athletes who can compete at the top of either discipline. It will be fun to watch!
Forsberg in 2015 was a monster and it was very impressive for her to do so well on an complicated, unfamiliar course that rewards local knowledge.
I've got friends who live in AK and have spent some time in Seward and have climbed the mtn. It's definitely Very steep. To put it into perspective, the race starts at sea level and goes up to between 2-3k feet in a little over a mile, before returning back down. You pick your route up and back down. My first year climbing it i took a bad line when i first hit the base of the mtn and ran into a dead end, clinging onto roots and rocks before figuring my way back down, before finally picking a better one.
Apparently people are airlifted off the mtn every year during the race, which makes sense. When you add the competition element to it, then the risk taking increases substantially.
BTW, several years ago a man went missing during the race and they hadn't fount him for days after. Does anyone know if they ever found him?
Wonder if she will do the Alpine Adventure Run in Sitka on the 15th. Longer, much more runnable course with unbelievable views. I ran the course last week, and it is a definite must do.
Still cannot believe Boise State's coach agrees to let Ostrander run this race every year. An early July marathon for a collegiate distance runner. Great idea.
It's a 3 mile race....

Nope. They never did find him. Bizarre story.

Running is not prison.
The same as any runner, she can run what she wants to run.
Wait, was this a marathon? :)
Can you site evidence of this every happening, let alone every year?

I suspect this was part of an agreement when she was recruited. She is very attached to this race.

That's correct. I remember saying it was part of the reason she chose Boise. The coach might not like honoring that part of the deal now, but if he hadn't made it she might not have gone there.
No, he was never found. They searched high and low for him, both on foot and from the air. You could hear the whir of the helicopter over the mountain for days. The locals strongly believe it was staged and he is off living a new life somewhere.

I believe that was part of the recruiting negotiation. She said that she'd done the race every year since grade 6 or 7, that it was a big part of her summer, and she expected/planned to continue doing this event while in college.

Sometimes I am embarrassed for the brojos.

I think this was the worst year (2012)- two or three major injuries and the missing runner.

The trail vs. track/roads/xc clash. Extreme Alaskan independence, provincialism, and machismo. Incredulous questioners from the lesser 48.
And of course you get your your typical letsrun trolls who hate everything about anyone and anything outside of the narrow walls of their mom's basement closet, from which the troll dwell! Keep up the good work chaps. Supper in a few hours.
How long was this marathon?
