It took him more than 5 hours to get from mile 62 to 78.

I never ate food during marathons, nor ultras, and think that is normal.
Matt Carpenter, in particular, didn't eat during his Western States 100 record win.
Matt Carpenter never set the course record at Western States 100. He have NEVER run that race.
Sounds like he decided to DNF but had to get to the next aid station to do so and didn't consume calories in between that time frame.

Also that he only carried something to eat the first hour and water. I assume he had a pacer with him. No food to share in case of a severe pace drop like Walmsey experienced. Something else for Jim to think about in the future.

The first 16 miles were slushy snow and then mud on and off, if you pushed too hard here it was going to come back and bite you later on.
Walmsley looked like he was pushing hard at that point and I was thinking what you said.
I'm interested to see his post race interview.
Or projectile vomit up everything for 4 hours until he reached solid food like bananas; is good for runners.
In ultras, it's not that you choose to eat nothing, it's that you are UNABLE to eat.
If you follow ultras, stomach issues are the number 1 reason for dnf. While pace is a factor, heat can make a HUGE difference.

Hence the respect for Mike Morton, Scott Jurek, Matt Carpetner and Karl Meltzer
Jimbo = DNF
OUCH, all that smack talking while wasted drunk talking about "no one can hang with me". Only to be walking after mile 78, what in the actual F. I wouldn't doubt if him getting trashed like this cost him his win
Probably all the hype and pressure, he felt like he was faster than he really was

Correction, the Leadville Trail 100 record in 2005, which makes no difference to the point.

In the interview comments the interviewer said he only had 2 beers. If he did get trashed, it's not a good game plan. It would make you dehydrated.
Boat? They have to cross the river on a boat? I didn't know this fact about this particular hiking race.
Matt Carpenter was on another planet of running. Not even Scott Jurek could touch him.
He was afraid of the water, and this is what happened.
