I believe you are required to compete in any event at nationals in order to be eligible for the wild card, so by taking 1 attempt he satisfies that requirement.
A other reason track is a shit event to promote. Come out and watch our champions do the minimum it takes to advance.
It's fine. It's like the top seeds in the NFL getting byes to the divisional round. -
They let them run since it gives NBC the story they want.
NBC does not treat track as a real sport, but as an opportunity to sell a "story".
That is also why they only push the olympics and not the sport of track.
Just sad for the athletes and the sport. -

I'm not a fan of English Gardner. She seems very angry. Not the the kind of anger you need to run on "Pure Hate". She scares me a little, Alyson Felix on the other hand does not scare me.

So for everyone who thinks the 100 has not peaking, take a look at the women's results. THer Oregon Ducks who almost blew NCAAs both made the team whereas the NCAA champ didn't even make it out of the first round.
