Congrats on your wedding this weekend!
So if schmelzle scratches, does gerlach get to run? obviously if this was NCAA, it wouldn't happen but just curious
Advancement is only for those that qualify through set championship qualifying procedures (auto and time standards). Gerlach will not be advanced regardless of scratch.
Why'd she compete if she knew she couldn't run the final?
Where are the letsrun trolls claiming schmelze "stole" a spot at the meet from someone else because she never had any intention on running the final?
One would assume to gain experience for at that level for the future.

Surely that puts a tarnish on Schmelzle's wedding.
Unless Uncle Fester wizzes in the punch bowl this will be topic #1 at every anniversary party
Why would that put a tarnish on her wedding day? I imagine it'll put a tarnish on Gerlach's day.
Haha yea

I don't understand this. Didn't she pick the date for her own wedding? Why didn't she just schedule it at another time?

I would imagine not every collegiate athlete plans their wedding a year out or so out expecting to run at a USA Championship with a 9:50 auto standard... sooooo yea.
I assume she booked her wedding more than a year in advance. Maybe the venue they liked was available this weekend so they jumped on it.
It's not like the 2018 national championship date is up on the USATF website yet. Was she supposed to consult with them to see when the meet would be?
Also maybe she didn't expect to be good when she was planning her wedding. She goes to N Illinois-when do they have good runners?
I agree with the planning statement USATF doesn't get info out too far in advance atleast not over a year for most events. But define "good" because looking at times they've done alright up there. 3 girls between 2:05-2:08, 2 sub 35 10ks, 9:50 and 10:27 steeples, 16:30-50 5ks, sub 4:40 mile... XC contested very well in the MAC (2nd to EMU who was top 9 at NCAA) and regionally, I mean not too dang bad ijs
Yea they historically have not been the best of programs but last couple years they've dramatically improved in distances. Look to be going very much so in the right direction atleast..

Good is making the final at the USA championships. Or good is making the USA championships.
So since when do they have good runners can be answered easily. Only schmelze. And only this year.
Man I wonder what the rest of the NCAA is then...

Yeah this is exactly my point. Do you think the No Illinois 2:08 runner is thinking about when the USA championships next year? Or their 16:50 5k runner? Maybe but probably not. So it's not outrageous that Schmezle picked her wedding date for this weekend.
