No accountability
Sounds like a world class fake to me. Didn't graduate. Gets kicked off his quasi-professional gig. Goes back to Penn State for a program that coddles dumb jocks who didn't graduate. Meh.
Hey Cas. Get a freaking job. Show up on time. Don't fish on the company dock.
Anybody else getting tired of how lots of people use "severe depression" as a crutch as to why things aren't going their way? No disrespect to the disease, it's a very serious and under-discussed problem in our society, but c'mon man. Have some accountability. We're talking about someone who went to Penn State: a huge party school and responsibility-less social construct for the athletes. No doubt that Cas was sensing "real life" was impending and took up on the plentiful opportunities to booze and party and not do his homework in his final semester. However, he got lucky with the sponsorship thing and was able to move on without crossing his t's and dotting his i's...which should already say enough to any prospective employer.
All this being said, this is probably the best thing he could do for himself. Finish that degree, because the pro running window isn't wide as most people wish it is, and the writing's on the wall.
Severe depression in 2013...not really relevant.
Gotta stay on those meds or accept the bad times will come back occasionally. That's your only two options you get as a responsible adult.
My beef is why does everyone have to come out in public about their personal problems. Earlier this year we had Nick Willis talking about his porn problem. It does no good to discuss your personal problems on Twitter, Facebook or any other social media. Get yourself help and leave the rest of the world out of it.
I wish him well.
I like Cas and wish him all the best! I hope he is able to find the right balance of everything in his life.

Cas is a hero. I'm inspired by his personal note.
I felt like buying some Brooks shoes, but then I remembered he was fired...and then I remembered their shoes are awful...then I got depressed. Thanks Cas.

I am on the fence about this. Between 2007 and 2009 I had what I classify now as legit severe depression. I am talking about the bed ridden kind though, not the my 800 was only 1:47.x kind.
Maybe he was depressed in his own way?
Let's not hate on this guy. He's still a kid and he's made some dumb mistakes. I'm sure its not easy getting dropped by a sponsor and even if that depression was a long time ago, this is still a tough stretch in his life and it can't be easy.
Good for him trying to get his degree, I truly hope he figures things out and realizes the talent that helped him run 1:44 and make a world team 2 years ago
It's bizarre how the Brooks Beasts would fire an athlete for dating a girl on the team yet would have an unregistered physio work with the team. They need to get their priorities straight.

Ignorant on depression - check
Terrible run-around ("it's a serious disease, BUT...") - check
Projecting your opinion onto an athlete - check
Pretending to know an athletes life - check
Pretending to know about college life and academics (Penn state isn't a top 50 US school) - check
Kicking someone when they're down - check
You are a loser.
Butthurt at facts - check
This is the first part of this entire saga that actually seems professional to me. Cas, Brooks, and the Beasts were silent over why he left Brooks and Mackey was still coaching him. In any other sport there would be a statement with some details and some investigative reporting. At least Cas said something and acknowledged he screwed up his golden ticket.
Get back, get that degree, get back to the grind, and try again next year.
is there a confirmed story on the Brooks fallout?

Nope and it is ridiculous. The rumor that he was sleeping with a married Brooks employee will follow him because they didn't put out a more detailed statement.
Uh..."blaming being douche on" shoulda been "blaming depression for."

So what are his so-called dumb mistakes? He sounds like a typical Penn State loser who couldn't even show up to class, now his enablers are acting as if he is corrageious for finishing his degree?
Courageous. ...effing spellcheck.
