OP, "kw1954" has it pretty dialed. Been an on and off resident for about a decade now, eventually might settle down here permanently, though i'd like to keep a california residence as well.
Not a whole lot to add to the KW's post, I actually live just off Montgomery and I don't mind it, but I'm also in a cul-de-sac and have two cops who live within 50yards of my house...and I carry everywhere I go- I'be left the house unarmed exactly twice and I can tell you exactly where I went, the memory is that clear.
If you're bold enough, feel free to leave an email address and I'd be happy to answer questions by email or phone. It really is a great place if you know what/where to look for. If you're outdoorsy in the slightest, you will eat it up. The camping/climbing/hiking scene in the state is second to very few, no joke.
Very safe, friendly folks, dont have to lock your doors, strong economy, great schools.
