Shalane was kind of a jerk to take this out of context, and as someone pointed out in the twitter thread, Shalane likely knows athletes who have had abortions. They just didn't feel close enough to shalane to share that info with her (or knew she would unfairly judge them).

The conclusions that can be drawn from this are very obvious here, but not PC to say it.
True. I would ask Shalane how many world gold medalists she knows.
So the set of female track & field athletes who have had an abortion is either 100%, 0%, or somewhere in between.
Thanks, this has been very educational.

Wiki: "While White women obtain 60% of all abortions, African American women are three times more likely to have an abortion."
Poor people of any race are more likely to have an abortion. I would imagine the rate of abortion among middle class Blacks and Whites are similar. Btw, I agree with Shalane is basically saying SRR can only speak for herself. With that said, I know someone who Shalane knows quite well who had an abortion. Perhaps Shalane was no long in close contact with this athlete and wouldn't know. I am almost certain people in Shalane's previous and current circle have had abortions, but it's not something athletes typically share with other which again is at odds with SRR's statement. A female athlete will typically faint an injure to allow recuperation from an abortion and not disclose it to other athletes, but will disclose to coaches.

Not only a spring vs distance culture thing - also could be a black vs while culture as well. I know by saying that people are going o be outraged.
Truth is black women are more fertile.

How have Shalane Flanagan and Sanya Richards-Ross never met?

Can you get pregnant without a period?
SRR and SF need to meet and spend some friendly time together.
SRR can give SF some tips on how to really run fast.
In exchange, SF can cook dinner for SRR.
Will Runner's World set this up, and cover it in a lovely 4 page feature article in the February issue, or is abortion a taboo subject for that rag?
And I believe they are likely both right, because not everyone shares or talks about abortions (even with closer friends).

A majority of people on these boards have no idea who Ruth Wysocki is and even those that claim they do probably googled her. But yes I would guess back in '84 Ruth didn't know too many teammates that had an abortion and definitely no one would've admitted it. Times have changed.
SRR was trying to sell books by being sensationalist.
Wonder whether AlSal uses this one.

This right here! The distance girls I've been with would get periods like 3 times a year and basically random times. There was even an article about a white distance woman who could not conceive for 2 years after she stopped running because of the mileage she put her body through for years.

They both know vastly different populations of runners. Shalane is surrounded by white girls in Starbuck land and SRR is sounded by black girls with challenging upbringings. Two different cultures at play here is all.
Anyone want to bet that Shalane knows a dozen+ athletes who have had abortions (if she knows about them or not is harder to say) and SRR knows a bunch of athletes who haven't had one. You would have to be beyond delusional to think the abortion rate is 0% or 100% in any meaningful population size.
