Coe and Ovett?
Edwin Moses vs. EVERYONE ELSE
The greatest athletics rivalry of all is probably Yuri Sedykh v Sergey Litvinov, the 2 greatest hammer throwers in history and 2 of the 3 to 'legally' throw over 86m. Disregarding the boycotted 1984 games, between them they won Olympic gold from 1976 to 1988. At both the 1980 and 1988 games they were 1st and 2nd. At the world champs they were 1st and 2nd in 1983. At the Europeans they were 1st and 2nd in 1986 and 1st and 3rd in 1982. At the Friendship Games of 1984 and Goodwill Games of 1986 they were also 1st and 2nd.
They are now still rivals, but as coaches. Currently, Sedykh holds an annual hammer camp in the USA. He is currently coaching Hammer throwers of the French team; Nicolas Figére (80,88) for instance. His compatriot and rival, Sergey Litvinov, is currently coaching the Belarusians; Ivan Tikhon and his own son Sergey Litvynov Jr.

Another vote for Coe vs Ovett, at least if you're of a certain age or a Brit. With Cram in there also. Exciting times.
I wish T&F had guys who actually raced like those guys did.

another vote for Coe v Ovett, and I am not a brit. I am, though, of that certain age. I remember Coe recounting how he did 3 workouts on x-mas day (or new years eve, one or the other) because we was worried that Ovett might be outworking him.
Kerrigan v Harding (non T&F) was pretty intense too...
Um, White people versus Black people.
I remember watching that Lewis vs. Johnson build up and drama as a kid. And then when they stood there on the start line in Seoul, Ben Johnson was so ridiculously huge and his eyes so yellow that his testing positive later was just a matter of time.
Anyone who doesn't say Coe vs. Ovett is an idiot.
Bolt vs. Gay in 2008-2009 was pretty good as well. A lot of people forget that Usain wasn't running all by himself.

Lakers - Celtics! Best rivalry EVER!!!
People in Alabama beg to differ as would folks in Columbus and Ann Arbor or New Haven and Cambridge or West Point and Annapolis.
Shalane vs Kara
There were some tense 10k races.

Auburn/Alabama is a regional rivalry propped up on the exuberance of college football fans.
Same with Michigan/Ohio State.
Army/Navy may be up there, but, be honest, the games don't mean anything in the national rankings. They are very inspiring, but...
If you want college football, I would put up USC/Notre Dame against any of the others.

Are we getting away from T/F?
How about
Barcelona/Real Madrid - soccer,
Affirmed/Alydar - horse racing,
Borg/McInroe - tennis,
Ali/Frazier - boxing
