Jim Ryun and Marty Liquori. Probably before you time.

You've got some great ones just in the mile/1500
Hagg vs. Anderson
Coe vs. Ovett
Elliot vs. Lincoln
Bannister vs. Landy
Bayi vs. Walker
Liquori vs. Ryan (probably US fans only, but "Liquori Grins and Wins" cover on SI was the inspiration for just about any kid in the early 70's
Maybe throw Cram/Aouita in there since their duel to the first sub 3:30 ever was so great with Cram winning head-to-head and Auoita going alone next time to eventually lower the record which stood for years after that.
Though, need more head-to-head races for a rivalry.
A couple of others:
Benoit vs. Waitz
Lewis vs. Powell

It could of been....this rivalry was missing something
Another vote for Coe vs Ovett, at least if you're of a certain age or a Brit. With Cram in there also. Exciting times.

I would agree with Ryun/Liquori,
also, Carl Lewis/ Mike Powell,
To be a great rivalry, you have to compete gainst one another more than 2 or 3 times.
Lewis and Powell went head to head at every competition, national or international, for years.
Count in medals and world records...They would be #1.
Kenyan distance runners versus Ethiopian distance runners
But Carl was busted too. Ben should get his Gold medal back or Carl should have his taken away. Hell, EVERY SINGLE GUY in the '88 race (except one) turned out to be juiced when samples were retested years later.
Best rivalry:
Anderson vs Hagg

Like watching women's bodybuilding. Interesting to look at but know it's not real.
Coe v. Ovett

Webb vs. Ritz
End of thread.
Carl was never sanctioned.
Had had a positive for an over the counter medication that was appealed.
Would have had a 90 day suspension and missed the 88 Olympics.
That's not being busted.
I'm sure he used PEDs, though.
The rivalry was till great.
The thing about Coe/Ovett is that the rivalry was largely a WR rivalry. They seemed to always duck each other in competition - never going head to head apart from some major exceptions (Olys). Instead, they'd be swapping WRs. Also, I think the press sort of built up the supposed rivalry more than it actually was. They made it a class war of sorts.
"Shorter v Rodgers"
They never really raced each other all that often.
The only two Official Olympic Medal Factories in the world have been rivals for over 100 years UCLA & USC.
Lakers - Celtics! Best rivalry EVER!!!
