How is he a selfish poser? He gave up his 2015 world team spot over a contract dispute with USATF that required all athletes to wear nike instead of their sponsors. That seems pretty real to me, and not at all selfish.

The problem with are you Nick worshipers is that he's not really good for the sport. He's the biggest poser when it comes to taking on Nike. He took Nike money for years and had no problems with Nike screwing other athletes when he was with Nike. And then he pitched a fit when I hit the shoe was on the other foot. That is not someone that cares about the sport that is some of the cares about himself. He's not even close to pre.
Not to mention he asked like his gum Is a revolutionary product. Clearly stole the idea from someone else. And it doesn't really work
Good Lord, please tell me English is not your first language.
I like Nick. He's done a lot for the sport, including making it more accessible and proving that you can be an entrepreneur and an elite athlete. It's crazy to think that this guy ran 1:42 in an Olympic final and was a couple of inches away from a WC gold medal. On top of all that, he's an amazing success story... Went D3, almost quit, came back and is now the most prolific US 800m runner ever.

Well, 95% of the posters on LR are juvenile idiots.
People on LR bash Rupp for being boring and goofy and a product of the NOP machinery, and then bashing Symmonds for being the exact opposite. That just shows what a bunch of retarded losers the Letsrunners are.

Whether he came up with the idea on his own or stole it from somewhere, are you honestly denying the fact that caffeine is a proven performance enhancer? Is your hatred of Nick so strong that you deny science?
Sick Nymmonds wrote:
Yeah really not sure where the hate on Symmonds from LR comes from. Maybe it's because he's outspoken against USATF and Nike, just like Pre was, and just like LR is today. Or is it because he's got a big personality with some showmanship (because we all know the last with T&F needs is more personality...) and likes to build his brand. God forbid a runner have interests outside of running right?
For people saying this is a pure marketing hoax and he's lying about his fitness so it seems cooler when he wins USA's and breaks 1:40 blah blah blah...what a load of shit haha. He's 34, raced once in the last year, and is coming off of injury. I think it's reasonable that he'd run shitty.
First off, he's 33.
Second, with all that you said about his past year, he opened with an almost even split 1:49.4 (ideal pace: 1:48)
Third, he's done this before (2015). Even mentioned in one of his recent vlogs that his opener at PTF was faster than he opened in 2015.
No one said it was a marketing hoax, they simply said that he is doing this to downplay his fitness and make for a great underdog(no pressure) comeback story. Especially if he wins but certainly If he at least makes the team
Look for his post race interviews at USAs, he will be laughing and saying how shocked he is that he made it through and that took everything out of him
Every Symmonds thread in the past few years...
1. Nick has workout
2. That's easy... I could do that
3. He looks fat and his gum sucks
4. You're jealous he gets girls
5. But, for serial, he ran fast a few years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if...
6. His gum sucks and his arguments against the system are specious
7. He's like Pre...did anyone mention he gets tail, copious amounts of tail. Do you get tail? In quantities equal to or greater than Nick? If you do get copious tail, have you run under 1:43?
8. Old timer...He is not like Pre. Also, I once got some "tail", but in those days we called it .... Anyway, I could easily do the posted workout in my tail-gettin' days and I only ran ....
9. You are old slow...and jealous...and so much tail for Nick. I do think his gum tastes like a combination of ass and chemicals.
10. At least we all agree the gum tastes bad
11. Your mom likes his gum
12. Repeat
I mean he is helping to advertise and sell the product which is really his job... he is still relevant to the people and people see he wears Brooks it still is his job to advertise...

This is what he does for a living (run)...there are many of us out here with real jobs that can handle 7 min pace after long hours of work without a complaint. This sort of mentality can only come from a privileged mindset. Brooks shouldn't be paying him...he is sucking at the job.
nailed it
The same losers might not be critical of both Rupp and Symmonds.I don't think LR is monolithic in its opinions of athletes. There is a feeling that running fans can't criticize athletes...and that criticism is "killing the sport.". I think it is the opposite. Criticism means people care, and take the time to debate. Go onto a professional sports (NFL/NBA) fan board. The fans are really critical, too, but they aren't killing the sport.Rupp and Symmonds are sad examples of what it takes for an athlete to make a living in the current model in our sport. Either you have to sell out and pimp yourself on social media, Or in Rupp';s case, you have to sell your soul to the devil to win medals. I feel bad for both of them that track can't offer them the same financial benefits of other sports.I think, ultimately, Symmonds was a victim of bad timing. He was correct in trying to monetize his SM following. His prime may have been a little too early to do it right, though. There are companies now that help monetize that. In essence, I think he was onto something...but just didn't nail it. If he came along 5 years later, I think he could have been a lot richer.

He's definitely downplaying his fitness. Now, to what degree we won't know until he races USA's.
Nick has had a ton of expectations put on him at every USA championship for the last 10 years. It's gotta be fun for him to play the underdog again.
I think a lot of the hate here stems from the fact that his training doesn't look very hard. He talks about how he hates distance running all the time, and runs workouts that many here could have done in high school. Yet he has a worlds medal and ran sub-143. Thus the jealousy and resentment.
I'd bet on him making the semis.

As profoundly disappointed I was in the splits of that workout, I still have the upmost faith in Symmonds to pull this one out of his ass and be in contention to make it to worlds, he has too much talent for me to want to bet against him. Plus how funny would it be if he runs 1:46 after posting workouts of this quality, I agree with the TC, I could also run this workout lol
Upmost?

He is very personable and reaches out to include the fans. A great competitor and has accomplished more than he probably should have.
And he really has fun with the sport.
I've met him briefly in person and got the same personable vibe.
He will be missed from the sport.
I hope he gets in at least one good race next week.
He recently ran 1:49 low and has upped his workouts since so he can't be in too bad of shape right now.
That workout didn't indicate even 1:49 shape so we can't judge anything from it.
He has not taken this last attempt serious, trying to get in shape at this late stage is embarrassing.
We have moved past his publicity stunt from two years ago.
We have some great new stars that have already surpassed him and where the future needs to be.

Bull. He has done nothing more for the sport than any other runner.
How has he made it more accessible?
You kids need to read up on other real runners. He's a nancy boy who always thinks he's worth more than he is.
Seriously have you seen any of Nick's interviews. Not engaging at all
He's actually boring on the track

First. He was injured so he wasn't going anyway and didn't give up anything but used it to get pub
Secondly, he completely misread the agreement and then lied about his interactions with usatf.
He had a chance the year before to raise the issue to really help athletes but didn't.
As a nike athlete he NEVER raised the issue because he simply didn't care about other runners getting screwed.
That is the definition of selfish
