I'm talking about in the weightroom, not in the woods during your morning run.
I noticed that many top middle distance guys (El Gerrouj for example) in addition to other plyometric exercises squat multiple sets of high reps for a phase in their strength training. I don't think its a full squat but the reps are 25 to 30. Almost similar to a hill workout or leg hopping.
Does anyone do this type of exercise and for how many weeks and what part of the season. It sounds like one of those things that may be very beneficial yet to me seems unorthodox enough that its worth giving a try.
I suppose there is an adaptation period but I could imagine this type of training would initially wipe you legs out too much to train hard.
One reason why I never messed around with lower body training but I was a 10k guy and I'm thinking more along the lines for a middle distance runner.
Can less developed beginning runners get benefits from an extensive weight regimn or is this best left for the talanted elites. I find it very difficult for my runners to add much stress or intensity in the weightroom without drastic negative consequences to their running but I suppose as with any stress there will be an adaptation period.
Sorry if I digressed but I guess can anyone who is knowledgeable on strength training tell me if this type of lifting pays off and is worth the effort?
