Is that it for him? Does anyone know if he was planning another 800 race to qualify for USAs?

He's already qualified for USAs thanks to his silver from Moscow. The real problem will be a) making it to the final and b) making it onto the team out of all the talent the US has in the 800m right now

a) yes
b) probably not (hard to believe though, after all these years).

99% certain you can't just qualify for USAs by having an outdoor medal from almost 4 years ago. Wouldn't his name appear on this list at the very least?
http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Outdoor-Championships/Status-of-Entries.aspxOlympian Nick Symmonds and HS Freshman Brandon Miller could have finished together in this race. What an eye opener...

I guess I've been proven wrong.
... and of most concern he looked terrible doing it. Was 8 or so meters down after 200m and just couldnt even get back into the mix even though it was barely sub 1.20 at 600m. Looked bulky and totally out of rhythm. Honestly, I think Symmonds is a legend but I don't know what the point of going to nationals would be for him.
Now he's really going to crap in his half tights.

I think he said this somewhere in a FloTrack quote/interview but his attitude is that he'll go out with a bang any way that he goes. i.e. he's all in, whether he's in 2:30 shape or 1:40 shape. Stumbling to the finish in 1:50 in the prelims would probably be just as glorious to him as making the final and running 1:44
That's actually not bad for a rust buster. If he races stumptown and runs a little better there he will make it out of the first round and if he does that he will get better throughout the rounds
he just got smoked in the B heat at a B meet with a time that wouldnt win high school nationals. Let's get real here. He's carrying an injury, can't train properly, and is facing younger guys who are better than he was in his prime.
Nick said his goal was 1:50. He's going to give nationals a go.
I will never understand why people trash Symmonds. Trash talk what he does off the track fine but he's one of the greatest US 800 runners. This video shows what a class act he is. He's accepting his fate as an aging 800 runner and giving all he can his last season. Respect.

Absolutely. He has carried the 800 for the U.S. well for nearly a decade, now time to hand off to the Young Guns.

Given the abudant hate for Nike on these forums I'm surprised you guys aren't taking into considerations that he'll be trash talking them with the younger generation if he makes it to nationals. ;-)
Good on him, what a champ!
He has no business going to the USA's and getting in on technicality. Everyone in the A race was 2-3 secs faster and he was beat by college kids who couldn't even qualify for NCAAs.
I bet he pull a a fall to the track stunt.
He was great when the USA was down in the 800m.
"Technicalities" are just "the rules." It's written down in black and white, and Symmonds earned his way in. This isn't like when Goucher lobbied USATF to get him into the 10k at the 2008 trials.
