The situation is a little bit difficult to explain, but Coach Guy wasn't technically affiliated with the school( wasn't a teacher) but still coached the guys anyway. The training they do is between about 50-60 mpw, nothing too crazy, but some quality workouts and a lot of support and desire to do well. You can never be 100% sure what factor makes a team great like that, but obviously what they have going on down there is special.

HAHA! I don't think you've seen one of the training plans. High volume workouts and usually closer to 70-80 miles in singles. Pretty much throws kids right to college expectations. It works for a good number of boys. I don't fault anyone for choosing to continue with it or leave though, but if you are going to create that kind of situation on a team at some point you are going to run into this problem.

I know for a fact Hasty hasn't gone over 70 miles a week more than a handful of times. 70-80 mpw "in singles" is definitely not the average mileage of those guys. Maybe if you took a couple of weeks in summer, but not the norm for 80% of the season.

Why do you say that? There's no reason coaching a national class athlete necessarily demands any more rigor, skill, or acumen. If anything, the athlete's natural ability may cover for a coach's errors or poor knowledge.I agree with you that in this case the coach's stable of athlete suggests he's very good. But it's entirely possible that there are dozens of coaches across the country doing better jobs with athletes running 4:20 miles--we just don't pay attention to them because we don't know their relative strengths and weaknesses coming into the program.

They supposedly train very hard. I heard from a source that last year, that crew ran 12x1k with a 3:00 jog, very fast with a longer warm-up and cooldown.

Kids who can't yet drive shouldn't do that kind of work.

On IAAF tables, Hasty's 4:01.75 scores 1054, which lines up with 8:37 for 2 miles. While it seems quite likely that Hasty will run a very fast 2m given decent weather, the NR does appear safe this year.

I see this a lot (both on these boards as well as IRL) successful high school programs whose athletes generally perform poorly in college which leads to people saying that they are overtrained in high school. While this is certainly true in some cases (and I know nothing about the Brentwood program), I think there are some overlooked mental aspects.

High school coaches have the unique position (in most cases) to be the person who introduces an athlete to the sport, and are also largely responsible for the way athletes view training. For a kid who improves a lot or reaches a really high level, the amount of respect they have for their coach and their coaches style of training is going to be extremely high. I think in a lot of cases this results in difficulties adjusting to a new or even slightly different coaching style when they move on to college. The change in team atmosphere/culture can have the same effect. On my college team, the local high school is one of the best in the state, and usually sends a few guys on to our school every year. Unfortunately, these guys often come in with the best PRs, but have a really low attrition rate and don't improve a lot. I think a large part of this is because there is a drastic difference between the coaching style they flourished under in high school (not overtrained, but very rigid) and the one they experience in college (knowledgable but laid back coach).

Hopefully Hasty continues to improve and have success, he strikes me as a very real deal talent. I remember watching him at NXR his soph year when he won, I have never seen anyone kick from the bottom of the hill at Wake Med the way he did to just drop the hammer on the field.

Does anyone know if he is going to be returning to his team for xc or is he going to be unattached his senior year?

As for Hasty--damn. No matter how you cut it, that kid ran 4:00 for 1600 without the benefit of a bunch of spring races. If he runs the 3200 at Brooks next week does he run a national record?

You don't "buy" championships in track/XC at the high school level. Unless you are accusing them of doping which would seem unsubstantiated.

I have seen plans for two different athletes. One being top end. They are much more similar to a college program than high school in both mileage and workout volume.

My observations on this is the college success from these guys is about the same as everyone else. Half do pretty well, half don't. I think many of the critics think there should be some huge improvement, but when you are a guy running 4:0x out of high school you are only going to drop a 4-8 seconds which I consider pretty solid at that speed.
