POMONA - A man convicted of killing a musician in what authorities
say may have been a dispute over child visitation rights was sentenced
Tuesday to 50 years to life in prison.
Jonathan Ming Chiu, 23, of Covina was convicted in October of
first-degree murder. Jurors deliberated for a little more than an hour
before reaching a decision.
Chiu fatally shot 30-year-old Travis Parker of Los Angeles in August
2004 in a parking lot behind a Diamond Bar music store where Parker
gave violin lessons.
The musician also had his own group, The Travis Parker Band, and played
with Waylon Jennings' son, Shooter Jennings, and other musicians.
Prosecutors said the motive may have involved disputed child visitation
rights.
Parker and his former girlfriend, Meredith Delfosse, had a daughter,
who is now 3, and Chiu learned of the parents' dispute when he became
Delfosse's boyfriend. According to trial testimony, he shot Parker the
day before a scheduled court hearing in which the musician was seeking
more visits with his daughter.
Although Delfosse has custody of the girl, Parker's mother, Nora
Parker, said she and her husband have regular visits with her.
Parker had recorded two albums, including "Travis Parker Band - Live
Clips and Staples," which was released a few weeks before his death.
Fellow musicians said his double-fiddle sound was catching on.
"The guy was basically establishing a whole new kind of fiddle-playing
for all genres," said country-western singer Marcel Chagnon.
