The OP may be right that the sub two attempt took a bit out of him that may have cost him the record today.
And you can only be in record shape for so long.
London 2:03:05 may wind up being his lifetime PR.
But a lot was learned from that sub two attempt that future runners and coaches will learn from.
And Kipchoge will long be remembered for that event vs how well actual record holders fame holds up.

What was learned other than a guy needs ultra light shoes with a lever in the midsole to give him artificial advantages over others wearing normal flats?

OP is right that the sub 2 hr attempt took a lot out of Kipchoge. Not an easy run. -

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking.
This is the type of thinking associate with mediocre cognition. Kipchoge has run many high level marathons. Has anybody broken the world record for the first time after so many high level efforts?

Would you rather have Denis Kimetto's career or Eliud Kipchoge's?
This is a separate issue. Somebody else will break Kimetto's record, but it will not be Kipchoge. Kipchoge has had a stellar career. Most of course would say Kipchoge has had a better running resume than Kimetto.
Kipchoge's 2:00:25 will be remembered long, long after the WR is broken. In fact, I really doubt that anyone will ever talk about the marathon WR without caveating that it wasn't as fast as Kipchoge's performance this past weekend. It's like he hung a big asterisk on the actual WR, when we all thought it'd be the other way around.
The sub 2 hour attempt is not taken seriously by the cognoscenti. It is a joke. People will remember that Kipchoge never held the record. -
I can't wait to look back on this thread after Kipchoge breaks the wr in Berlin.

Yes. I believe you. Except when Kipchoge fails again to break the record, you will be nowhere to be found. Kipchoge will never break it. That is the whole point of the thread. Look at many of you so sure Kipchoge was going to break it last year. But of course it did not happen... -
Kipchoge has run a better performance than the WR like 4x. It’s not that great of a feat for him. He just needs one solid weather day.

I suppose you might be this site’s greatest poster if not for your electronic device... -

Ok then. Post your email address and we'll have a bet. You know very little to nothing about running. Kipchoge will break the world record and you aren't confident enough to bet. -
See here's where I think you are wrong.
Listen to his statement about running 'a beautiful race'.
I've always maintained that kipchoge is not of this world.
Listen to him.
Monza was a beautiful race.
And always be remembered.
Kipchoge exists on a different plane of existence. -
I know as much or more about running than anyone. Kipchoge is not going to get the marathon world record. He is now slightly past his prime so how the hell is he going to get a record he could not get in his prime? The Ethiopian he beat yesterday, Kitata, might get the record but Kipchoge cannot.

And so, no offense, do you... -
At his level you run to make money, period. He wants to win and make the dough. Does he want the world record, of course. But priority number one is winning as many big pay marathons as possible.

That may be but then why run the Olympics? I am sure Kipchoge would like to make money and hold the record but he never will have the record. Nonetheless, he may be the greatest marathoner ever. -
Breaking2 and that National Geographic doc have earned him, and the sport, much more attention than he could have had for just breaking the record.

Maybe so but it is attention from idiots, at least in terms of their knowledge of the sport. Kipchoge will never hold the marathon record and the sub 2 attempt was not much different than running a downhill marathon, I.e., it was a joke. -

any attention is good attention, it definitely raised kipchoge's popularity in the world
Instagram followers pre sub2 ~5000, currently 121k(also up from 111k Saturday night); twitter ~3000 followers. currently ~45000
he put himself and running in a much more global light so I'm not sure how you think its bad anywhere? -
The attention is fine. Kipchoge will never hold the marathon world record. I really am making that point and I do think he might have had a shot at it if he had not done the sub 2 attempt. However the window is now shut. Having said that, Kipchoge might be better off for having received all this attention. That was never part of my point. Kipchoge could probably get more followers if he ran his next marathon naked. But he will never hold the world record, unless he became the owner of the fastest naked marathon.
