People don't post anything worthwhile on this board unless it's negative. Stember ran very, very well. That double proves that he is strong.
Where did he run it??
He's got a ways to go... but definitely positive signs!
I'll re-post some comments I made on this topic in another post. I've heard it first hand about how hard Stember is working and I'm happy to see that he's getting some well-deserved success.
I heard Walt Lange (Stember's HS coach) speak at a clinic talk a couple of weekends ago. He showed some video of Stember doing some very technical drills that looked pretty demanding. I got the impression that he's been adjusting to the physical demands of the drills and had been pretty fatigued. Looks like things are falling into place now.
Also, someone had mentioned on here that Lange was pretty heavy into intense intervals. He made available some training logs at the clinic from one of the Mastalir twins in the 80s and the intervals didn't seem to me to be all that outrageous. Certainly less than Donald Sage or Marius Bakken would have been doing for Joe Newton. Also lots of 7 to 9 mile runs done "Kenyan style" with a slow start and the last mile or so at a pretty good clip. True, the Mastalirs never did much in college or beyond, but I think that's when the great Brooks Johnson was still coaching at Stanford.
Whoa Doggey
Dat lad Stember is back on track like a hound dog on the trail of a nasty verment.
I hope this is just a sample of things to come for Stember
and may this meet be a small indication of his ability come this summer.
I'm a huge Stember fan and would love to see him run well...but putting this in perspective:
His best indoor mile times in 2000 and 2001 were also 3:58. In the latter year, he was subpar.
His 1:49 double was impressive, but I bet he could've done that before.
Ahhhhh, nothing like seeing a blessing out of his Lordship Conto....of course with reservations. If he's not bashing Webb on dyestat, he's taking care of business putting down others on letsrun.
I was just wondering how many seasons the great Conto went through without an off-race. And if he managed to go his whole career without having an off-season. Of course, it's easy not to have an off-season when you do your running with your fingers behind a desk.
props to mike. I don't know why a lot of guys (esp. the younger guys) seem to think athletes like mike or alan webb don't need a few tune-up races. The 3000m mike ran a few weeks ago and the 800m webb ran were just that: tune-ups. Few runners i know of just step on the track and reel off PRs or times close to their PRs in early to mid-February. Hell, most of the world is not even running track races yet.
On another note I agree with the post above that there are way too many useless negative post. It was one thing back in the day with tnfmedia.com which had a select few who had negative things to say. At least then it was fresh and new (and sometimes right), but now almost 100% of the negative post are just crap. Half the post I read here are practicaly urban legend in the running world. Some of this stuff is trash i read back in '93 when there was just the old tnf listserv/newsgroup out of u of oregon. Gives us old guys a break and be specific when you rip someone. Don't just say they suck, any one can do that. Point out a legitimate reason, if you have none then shut up.
