What do you think is easier, running under 3 minutes for 1 km or under 3 hours for the marathon? I feel like it would take better fitness or ability to run that fast for 1000 m but overall would be more demanding to do a marathon.

My hunch is that this depends on age and gender. A young guy will likely find the sub-3 1000m much easier. An older runner, especially female, will find the sub-3 marathon to be more attainable.
What? A 3 min 1k is like 4:48 mile pace, right? You would come through the 800 in 2:24. You all are telling me that you think it is more difficult to run THAT than a 3 hour 'thon? I think you all are nuts. The 3min 1k can be done by middle schoolers.
Uh.....Nope. wrote:

The term "easy" is a bit odd in this context. It seems to me that a 3min 1k is "easier" if you're genetically blessed, but far less broadly accessible than a 3h marathon. Which is to say that I think people with natural talent can easily run a 3min 1k, but a hell of a lot more people with less talent, and who could never hold sub-5:00 pace for more than a few hundred meters, could potentially train hard and run a 3h marathon.

This. In HS I could do 6x1k sub-3 as a workout but doubt I could have run sub-3 hr marathon if I'd tried (not enough total mileage; considered 12 miles a long run). Now in 30's and can't hit anywhere near those times for intervals but 2:30s for marathon.

WHAT!!! You're telling me you can run a 2:30 'thon but can't run a 3 min 1000? I have a hard time believing that.

Yep. I also don't believe that.
Female here. I think the 1k is easier if you have any small amount of speed. I ran 2:50 in college but would struggle to run long runs at sub-7 min pace. Probably would have just barely cracked 3 hours if I raced a marathon and went all out. I also think the training required to go sub 3 in a 1k is much less demanding - did so in HS running 30mpw, at a time when I wasn't even breaking 10 in the 3k and never ran over 6 miles in one run. If I wanted to run a sub 3 marathon, I'm pretty sure I would need to go at least 45 mpw with some long, hard intervals.

Two people obviously not in there 30s. If you can run 6x1k at 3:00 you are running 15 flat in a 5k. I can easily see a 15:00 5k runner in college struggling to break 16:00 in his mid 30s but still able to run under 2:40 in a marathon.

I'm actually 42, but whatever. Look, a 3 min 1k is NOT difficult. We're not talking about 3 min 1k PACE for a race, or even as repeats in a workout. We're talking about running it ONE TIME. I could run that right now, but couldn't come close to a 3 hour 'thon.
Depends. I know a guy who ran 2:58, but his 800m pb is in the 2:20s and he can't even break 5:10 for 1500m. He's in his 40s, though, don't know if this is a factor.
He actually said he "can't hit those times FOR INTERVELS."
2:59 1000m equals 2:50:57 marathon.
2:59:59 marathon equals 3:08:05 1000m.
SUb-3 marathon is easier.
Sub 3 1km for sure
sub-3 1km. Think about it like this: I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you. In other words, ain't no bear going sub-3 in the 'thon and neither do you (to outrun you).
I agree that it depends on your age. I ran a half marathon in 1:18:06 and have done a 20 miler at 6:12 per mile pace. It wasn't easy, but I wasn't all out either.
I did a 1k track race last year and ran a 2:46. The whole race felt like I was sprinting, heavy lactic acid feeling. I also raced an 800 meter that til this day, I consider the hardest race I've ever done. 1K is harder for sure.

Agreed. Old guy here. Sub-3 marathon for me. Ran in the high 2:50s several times. Sub-3 1K would seem almost impossible. I have no high-end speed.

Unless of course, I ran the 1K downhill in the middle of the night at Cal Berkeley. ;-)

Yes, you have it almost exactly. 5k PR 15:08, usually run almost a minute slower now, and 2:36 marathon PR. I didn't say I couldn't run a single sub-3 km now, just that it would be almost a race level effort where as it used to interval pace.
