The reason i say to do this is because it makes the 800m pace feel slower which will make you use less energy to run the pace(efficient). This allows you to cover peak volume at goal 800m pace or better in practice and in the race what it does is that it helps you come through the 400 and not feel like a sprint and then at 600 when others are starting to hurt you still have that aerobic energy left to pull you through the finish. Working on the aerobic system helps from 600-800m but if you’re not efficient at goal pace you’re only going to do well at sit and kick efforts that don’t typically yield PBs.
This is gold! keep sharing. Thank you
Most of what i would Share in terms of training goes, you could see Similar stuff on the old sub 1:50 thread as I followed it very closely during college and my college coach was very open to what I learned from it and suggested we do and we came together with a solid training plan. For the most part in the fall I worked both ends of the spectrum working on endurance with repeats, threshold stuff, and also doing short sprints like 50s-60m flys and extended it to 150s by end of fall. I kinda had a mentality in the fall that some days I was a 5k runner and some days I were a 200/400m sprinter.
In the spring I was an 800 runner every day. Cutdown 800m, I can remember doing something like 2:12, 2:10, 2:08.... down to 2:04 with 2:30 rest. 5-6 reps depending on how i felt. But I always did soemthing fast at the end like a 300m or 400m, if a 400 somewhere around 50-52 without going to the well. Then a day strictly 800m pace like a 4x4x200 session or 8x300. As i got better I didn’t necessarily get faster with these reps just needed less recovery. But I wasn’t a 400/800 runner, they typically try to increase then length that they can hold a hard effort like 500-600 or run the intervals faster. I just got to the point where I couldn’t run faster so trying to make very minimal increases in the total volume and /or the recovery helped me a lot.. in hindsight I think it helped improve my 1500 more.
