Wow. Just wow. I am not going to launch into a football is screwing us over tirade, because that doesn't make any more sense than saying XC screws over less popular sports. I am more disappointed that one of the greatest universities in the world which has one of the most impressive campuses in the world has made this decision. Hopefully people come to their senses.

Fake news? -
Based on how little Stanford has run its own people in the meet the last few years, you get the feeling they didn't fight to keep it very much.
But the word "canceled" is a bit misleading. A Stanford release says "suspended" and confirms that it'll be back in 2018. -

Fair enough on being "suspended." However, I wouldn't imagine this scheduling conflict to be a one-off event in the coming years.
Perhaps the real bummer is this was a huge high school invitational. It's really the early season meet for Northern California XC teams. -

Good point. It seems as if there's going to be a home game 50% of the time on that weekend. It doesn't help that Pac-12 FB schedules aren't set all that far in advance.
And very true about the high school section. A real shame. -

Cross country doesn't steal scheduled venues from swimmers, wrestlers, swimmers, basketball, baseball, or any other type of less popular sport.
Football is entirely to blame for this. -
Football is king. Nothing to see here. End of story.

I don't disagree with the first sentence. Full disclosure, I'm a rabid Stanford football fan (who doesn't love Pasadena in January). Something just doesn't add up here as you have a university with practically infinite resources, and two venues that are roughly a mile away as the crow flies, and closer to 2 miles by car. As far as law enforcement resources being a factor - how many cops have you seen directing traffic at a cross country meet? -
I have a feeling Miltenberg didn't really want to host this anyway & as soon as he had an excuse not to...it wasn't a hard sell...trust me...
-
Our HC always wants to go up there and it's really not worth the travel. Kinda relieved I don't have to decide between going or worrying if he's going to do anything off the wall.

I guess we'll find out when/if they bring it back next year. Stanford hosts Pac-12s as well. -

Totally agree. Stanford is used to holding 5 athletic events, sports camps, musical performances and academic conferences simultaneously. And the golf course and football stadium are located at opposite ends of the campus (Their medical school and trauma hospital are located right between the two as well). This makes no sense at all. -
I'm not about to cry for the California kids who don't already have another 1000 great meets to run at the new england kids don't
-
How about reschedule the meet for earlier in the week.
-
I've raced at the Jamboree the same morning of an Oklahoma state football game and Stillwater was a little crazy during that day. I've never been to Stanford but I'm sure it would also be a zoo on that day. No excuse to cancel a prestigious meet whether it be high school or college however if Stanford didn't want to host the meet anyway the football game excuse is an easy scapegoat.

This^^^ It's obvious that Stanford doesn't put much value in hosting anymore. They always rested some of their top guys, but most recently haven't even cared to put a team out that could win their home meet. With their talent and depth it wouldn't be that hard, but the current coaching staff seems more set on the other big meets across the country.
It's not like the meet hasn't overlapped with home football in the past. -

This guy is right. This is actually a benefit because instead of Stanford collecting money that they don't need from high school boosters, other high schools that need the money will get paid a lot more than expected. -
Read into this what you will. September 2016 U. Tennessee cancelled Thursday classes to accommodate a Thursday night football game on ESPN.
Good to know that college sports are amateur, and ALL college athletes are amateur......sarcasm intended, but the bad spelling is not. -
Follow the money.

Ha! Alright now I don't feel so bad.
