Pretty much so CNA chicks working on the floor can send t*tty pics that self destruct after 15 seconds?

It started as a Peek a boo app for kids. Yes, it facilitated the sexting culture but not by intention. No, the images do not entirely self destruct (read about hacks).
The purpose is the allure of being the next mysterious and funny social media for the next generation. There is a layer of artificial intelligence that it possesses which also makes it unique -- we know them more casually as the face filters where you can put a chipmunk nose on your own nose. It allows the narcissist to practice taking pictures of themselves.
Mommies and Daddies wonder why their teens and college students have data problems? Snap chat is a huge data hog.
Communication evolves.It went from this:
Letter - Formal
Call - Primary
Email - Informal
To this:
Letter - Infrequent
Call - Formal
Email - Primary
Text - Informal
To now this:
Letter - Infrequent
Call - Emergency
Email - Formal
Text - Primary
Snap - Informal
As the Text has become the primary form of communication, there are times when one wants to share something with a friend, but it seems too trivial to text. A Snap is inherently lighthearted, and perfect for these situations.
A way for porn stars to make money.
Back in the day, you would see someone face to face.
You could talk to each other or even flash each other.
No recording of it, just your memory of it happening.
I guess Snapchat is trying to emulate that in the digital world.
People don't want a trail of everything they write.
It hasn't caught on for me. That's just my theory.

Madam speaker, may I remind you that the corporations are cashing in our libidos and libidinal and social events and milestones!

I agree with this… But to directly answer the question: it's to make money for the owners of Snap, largely due to the advertising it can sell because of how popular its use has become especially in a demographic that isn't as exposed to traditional media ads as previous generations.
Yo man snapchat was cracking it. If you was on Vine you'd da scoped da comedians man and they jumped to snapchat. But before dat, it was gold rush, a fad. California? Or Alaska!! Nah man Nevada, silver mines maybe. I dunno
I've concluded Snap is just a way for people to cheat on their spouses. You can get dozens of nudes sent to your phone anytime and you can even set up times and places to meet with all the evidence disappearing. What a great world we live in.

Like... a phone call?
Seems everyone on this thread is missing the point.
Teens growing up don't want to be on the same platform as their parents, Facebook, so they went looking for other platforms. They've learned that dumb tweets come back to haunt you, so they only post important things on Instagram to update friends/family and the rest they put on Snap for their inner circle. That's what Snapchat is, it's the old Twitter and FB back when you could post and not get sent to HR or have your grandma see that you're smoking dope topless in the back of your senior boyfriends Corolla.

Well, thanks. I was leaning towards "Certified Nursing Assistant."
Anyone else? Bueller?

You have to be right. My high school girlfriend was a CNA during HS, treating the job as an internship before eventually going to college for nursing and becoming a nurse practitioner. The job qualifications and pay are what you'd expect from a job that a current HS student could get in their spare time. The joke was trying to pick a low-end, female dominated job to play off of.
Being able to screenshot snaps is bringing it's death sooner rather than later.
To the person who laid out the "formal, primary, etc" post, nice work. But you could go further back than that. And further into the future.

Snapchat is a distraction while mark zeeburg plots to secretly re unveil the old Facebook. Facebook 2.0.
