347. 10 pieces of fruit per day.
Studies have shown that eating exactly 10 pieces of fruit per day is the single most important determinant of marathon success. If you don’t believe me, just as veggieboy aka runfruitrepeat.
More tips still to come!!!

Currently sitting at my desk, in tears from laughing at this thread. I vividly remember this last year, this is an LRC classic. The poor guy who started this was probably genuinely trying to give input and it turned into a full on train wreck..

I'm sitting in the Denver Airport about to head to Eugene for the marathon this weekend and am laughing out loud reading this. People probably think I'm "special." First time I ever saw this thread. Thought I could get a few tips for the race ... instead I got one of the funniest threads I've ever read on LetsRun.
Tip 345.
Run your first mile in the marathon at mile pace. This should be around 4:31 - 4:33 your first mile. This will cause runners like Galen Rupp to panic and make him drop out by mile 19. Be sure to do this every couple miles during the race so you drain all the other Galen Rupp Humans energy. If you can’t hold 4:33 for 1 mile then I advice looking back at rule #101. Never forget rule #101!

it is 10 pcs of WHOLE fruit per day. You can substitute 3 lbs of fresh cut fruit.

If you are being tailgated by another runner during your “thon”, make sure to give him the bird and make fast stops to throw him off! Make sure the runner is angry. Bonus points if he overtakes your lane and you speed up and smash his right “blinker” out.

Remember your high school coach yelling at you to not let that guy pass?
Well, its the same thing in the marathon, everytime someone comes up onto your shoulder, put in a hard surge right in front of them to establish your dominance! You must prove you are the alpha male, even if it is mile 1!
Choose the right course and the right time of year;
Flat courses cause monotonous strain on the muscles; a hilly course with at least an elevation gain of 1200 feet is best for a first timer. I recommend the Flying Pig or Pittsburgh for your debut. My debut was at both courses and I set a PR both times.
Also, we all know from high school sports that muscles are easily pulled in cool weather. I recommend a starting temp of at least 70F.
Remember a nasty fart in the start corrals can be a tension breaker and conversation starter that can bind nervous runners into a close knit club. Don't hold back.
Oh, and don't forget to pee in a Gatorade bottle in that corral and then toss it over the fence just before the start so that an unsuspecting, stressed competitor can mistake it for the lime flavor.
You only need to know three things in the marathon:
1. Start fast
2. Push the middle
3. End strong
Tip 909
Fade from the front, only way to run a race

5x18 is the only way to guarantee that you'll break 2:55 in the 'thon.
More great info coming soon!
So that’s where the 5x18 meme came from.
Its been a few years, any more tips rcjason?

A marathon is a long way to go without giving the little guy some fresh air. In the middle of the race right when things start to get tough, flop it out for a mile or two. The fresh air will rejuvenate you and prepare you for "the wall".
Bump. +1

Tip #910
Wear loose fitting shoes, preferably with velcro straps instead of laces
Late in the marathon you're feet are going to swell...Having velcro will save you time from tying and untying your shoe during the race

If you're going to go to Kenya and want to trick some athletes into believing you have clout so you can coach them, wear a bunch team USA gear you found at Goodwill.
