Gets the women only marathon world record!!! 2:16:59!!
Gets the women only marathon world record!!! 2:16:59!!
WR is hers!!
MARY KEITANY WINS IN 2:16:57! WOMEN'S ONLY WORLD RECORD.
2:17:01 says the official timing.
Dibaba was very fast when she wasn't throwing up.
Paying tribute to the recently departed Don Rickles by copying his hairstyle. Classy move.
Closed amazing 2:17:58 I think it was
Dibaba was getting inside Paula's womens WR as well if not for the stomach issues. Future WR holder?
Dibbaba breaks Ethiopian National record!! Kudos to her for fighting through miles & miles of stomach problems. Can't wait for her 3rd marathon. Mergia in 3rd, then Kiprop & Vivian in 5th in a great debut!!

Still slower than Paula. No WR
Fantastic performances from Keitany and Dibaba, becoming the second and third fastest of all time.
None of these marathons accurately state those final distances. It took Keitany at least 73 seconds to run the final "385 yards." 5:33 pace in the stretch?
I think it was 2:16.57. I could be wrong.
She did slow down quite a bit for the last K.
It probably is accurate for a 26 mile point - they have to add a bit of margin on to account for measurement error.
Craziness
1 KEITANY, Mary (KEN) 102 18-39 - - +00:00 02:17:01
2 DIBABA, Tirunesh (ETH) 107 18-39 - - +00:56 02:17:56
Keitany ran a reported 4:53 26th mile. Absolutely mind-boggling.
Congrats to Mary!....I think that RAK half marathon really helped her, because she was blazing in that as well!
And Dibaba?
Welcome back!....What a showing...what a showing. She is now the third fastest women of all time in the marathon. and still the Fastest woman at 5ooo meters.

So I don't really follow marathoning or running and I looked up the world records for men and women. I know that the Kenyan and Ethiopian runners are pretty much in a different class from other countries. My question is who is "Paula" that the commentators keep mentioning? She is a white UK runner who has a world record time that is around 5 minutes faster than what most Kenyan/Ethiopian women normally win these races in. Is this normal for women and are there other women like her dominating the Africans?
adding that margin to the final "385 yards" is extremely misleading.
