Wow! That's a shocker. He used to post here as TTFlyer. The quote will live forever RIP.
Well that's a shock. Enjoyed talking to him many times in his store in Montclair, NJ.
Great range as a runner 4:01 miler and of course two tough seconds at Boston that I saw.
Died with his boots on, as they say.
Sad news. A legend who never really got the accolades he was due.
What were his times in those wins?
Very inspiring guy, RIP...
Blown away. Just found out that my friend Tom Fleming has passed away from a heart attack. Just last summer Tom and I drove from Portland to Eugene for the Olympic Trials and spent a lot of time at the trials catching up with old friends.
Tom was the 1973 and 1975 New York Marathon champ and was runner up at Boston in 1973 and 1974.In July 2014, Tom was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in Utica, NY.
He won 27 of the 63 marathons that he entered against the best in the world.
He was quoted as saying "Somewhere, someone in the world is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win."
Godspeed, my friend. There's going to be one hell of a post race party in heaven tonight.
Very inspiring guy, RIP...
So heartbreaking. He coached the town right next to mine, I would always see him a track meets/ at the local track. He was always willing to give me running advice. He was a great coach, teacher, and overall person. He will be deeply missed. Yes there will be a huge party in heaven today.
Get the frick outta here -- there's actually a National Distance Running Hall of Fame, and, like the Baseball Hall of Fame, is also located in upstate NY?
Excellent runner.
RIP Tom.
Never met him, but read plenty. A legend, old school. RIP.
Quite remarkable that he dies while doing what he loves. 65 is way too young. My dad's age when he died, actually.

He was a genuine great person. Loved the sport, loved helping others. Every year he would be the meet direct of the sunset classic road race to raise money for the special needs children in his town. He wasn't your average joe; very inspiring/ motivating person. I have a heavy heart.
Here is a great video about him

Didn't realize he was that young...always associated him with the Rodgers/Shorter cohort.
aside- lol at Gary Fanelli in the Blues Bros getup.

Great to see that video. Tom and Bill were good friends, both products of the 60s, both Vietnam objectors--cut from the same mold. We lost a legend today.
thanks for the article. GREAT READ.
It is so sad that running shortens the lifespan. RIP Tom Fleming.

Tom Fleming is supposed to have grown 3 inches as a 30 year old adult. He immediately got faster as well.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
