I had something similar develop between my junior and senior years of college (summer of 09). I got bone spurs on the back of both of my heels which lead to severe achillies tendonitis, it would slowly go away after a few weeks of not training but would flare up after starting running again. The doctors gave me the option of surgically removing the spurs or cutting out running.
I took several years off and after several unsuccessful attempts at comebacks, I learned that you really need to take care of your body (eat correctly, drink less, sleep more, stretch, ice) and eventually I was able to get back into it. I am glad that I am able to run again but it takes a lot more time and patience than I had in my early 20s to stay healthy and see improvements. I am now almost back down to my college weight and focusing on longer races because I don't think I'll ever have the time or drive to go after my mile, 5k, and 10k PRs from college.
My advice to you is to take some time off until you don't feel any pain, at least triple that time before you start running. When you do get back into it, go extremely slowly and back off if you need to. It can be frustrating seeing all of your friends continue running and succeeding but there isn't any reason why you can't just take a hiatus from running and come back stronger - just realize that it will take a long time. In the meantime, focus on other aspects of your life, no need to stay connected to the "running community". There will always be a running group or something to get into when you are ready.
Good Luck
