Debut big ultra at TNF 50 in December
Another ex Hanson runner. Just like Canaday and Laney.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading that
Pretty funny he's on a 12,633 peak wearing a shirt from Columbus, Ohio.
What better gig than travelling the world running on great trails in beautiful places.
Not sure I'd say uh oh... Pretty sure tnf won't be a win for him. He hasn't proved he can compete on trails. The only results I'm finding was at the xterra world trail championship where he was over 6 minutes behind Joe Gray? I see Nick has won some local races in flag but I don't know if those courses are legit or if any top trail goats show up for those?
Title is a little misleading. I specifically told the writer of the article that there are guys at Comrades (an ultra) that have run 2:08-2:10 marathons as their PRs. It's not like no sub 2:11 guys haven't done ultra marathons before. Now on the trails in the US that might be mostly true as the top "speed guys" are usually guys like Max King and Ryan Bak (2:14 marathoners or so)....which doesn't always pan out for 100-milers (or super steep techy stuff). In "MUT Running" even Olympic gold marathon champs like Stephen Kiprotich don't always win mountain races (i.e. he was only 5th at the WMRA world champs). That being said i think it will be great to have Nick out there on the trails doing 50-milers and such! Hansons marathon training/program experience gives one a good background for the longer distances.

Gotta love they sage Canaday not only reads but posts on this
I always appreciate Sage's insight.
Really, and what major marathon was Nick going to win with a 2:10? I think he will find more meaning on the trails as a possible competitor than having the 100th best time in the world as a road marathoner.
Just curious why he would announce this now, and not wait until after he does the Pittsburgh Marathon in a few weeks? It just seems like weird timing. Nick is a great person, and I wish him all the luck in the world. I was just confused and thought he was dropping out of Pittsburgh to pursue trail races instead..
What's weirder, Arciniaga doing this, or Anthony Famiglietti signing up for a 100 miler? Because he is signed up for Run Rabbit Run.
Both of these races have real prize money and that's rare in the ultra world unless it's a big race in Europe or Africa
I think he announced it now to create more buzz for Pittsburgh

Moving from roads to trails= the meaningful, competitive part of his career is over. Ultras are the elephant graveyard. Hobbyist.
You do realize Jim Walmsley makes more money from Hoka One One than any of their track or road runners...
Fam is the real deal. Ultra records gonna be quaking in their boots once Fam hits the trails for real.

This is great news, now he will be able to develop his oneness with nature as he moves through the landscape, journeying within and without the environment. Also he can now work harder on growing a bushy beard and wearing goofy sunglasses when he runs, and eating vegan nut butters. Far out, man!
"That being said i think it will be great to have Nick out there on the trails doing 50-milers and such! Just because you have had some success transferring your sub-elite marathon skills to the trails does not mean Hansons has any benefit for a trail runner.
Chill. You little twat.
He ran the Catalina trail marathon a month ago in 2:46:08. Course record is 2:39:58. Not sure what the conditions were. https://results.chronotrack.com/m/ctlive/#28069/race/70109
