Laz says the books are unmanned checkpoints and that, like a running race such as the Boston Marathon, if you miss a checkpoint you're DQ'd.
But he didn't miss a checkpoint. What's with this missed the last two miles stuff?

Different laps of the same course are run in opposite directions depending on the lap number. Gary was supposed to be returning from up the hill down to the yellow gate from the opposite direction. When he came in from the wrong direction he showed the race director where he had run after he got lost in some fog, which was allegedly "2 miles short" in addition to being 6 seconds slow. There's a video at the finish and right away the RD ('Laz') is saying "6 seconds, but it doesn't matter because he came in the wrong way".
There's a documentary from a few years back that used to be on Netflix, pretty interesting if you're interested in learning more about this unique race.
