I had a PRP injection in my knee after serious knee pain and IT band syndrome for over 6 months. I first began with every type of treatment you could imagine, PT, graston, chiropractor, ultrasound, stim, ice heat... you name it. I saw 4 different doctors and still no improvement.
After missing 5 months, I met with a doctor who practices regenerative medicine and he suggested I PRP to me. He explained the science behind it and I was convinced.
I had an MRI, and then ultrasound imaging done so the doctor could see exactly where to inject the PRP. The actual procedure was done on a Thursday afternoon (so I could stay home all weekend and rest). I got there and they immediately drew a lot of blood from my arm. I then went back to the waiting room while they spun the blood to get the PRP out.
After about 30 mins I went back in and they used local numming agents on my thigh and down so I wouldn't feel anything. After that they did 2 injections of PRP. One on the outside of my knee and the other where the IT band inserts in the knee. The whole injection procedure took maybe 20 minutes.
I had to lay there for a few minutes and then they had me stand up and bend my knee but I couldn't because it felt as if my knee was very full. I was able to walk without bending my knee too much. I felt no pain at all. For the next 2 days I did very little walking because my knee was extremely swollen. I could not bend at all.
After 2 days I began walking in the hopes of increasing mobility, bending became easier and easier. I did no physical exercise for 2 weeks and tried to just increase mobility everyday. I was able to walk normally after about 10 days. After 2 weeks, I some light jogging and then after 3 weeks I was back to normal. After 3 months I am 100% back to normal and have had no pain since the injection.
Some things to keep in mind is that you can't take ibruprofen or tylenol for 6 weeks after PRP and you can't ice for 4 weeks. It would stop the impact of PRP and expect to do no physical activities for 2 weeks.
