No, they could have just streamed outside and around.
You really think they would have been able to escape the gravitational pull?
i agree. he was definitely thrown downeveryone loses in a situation like this.

Interesting is how puny and ineffective a runner's mass is in a collision. He was running 15 mph and barely budged that official.
Look again. If, as you say, the initial collision "barely budged" the official, then how and why did he he hit the ground so hard, and face first at that?
Answer: because the rabbit grabbed his jacket by the left shoulder and gave him a hard yank. And down and out he went.
Not blaming the rabbit at all; he was instinctively doing the job of clearing the track. But the official didn't just "fall".

It wasn't an official that was hit by a shot in Portland. It was a photographer that was in a position that he shouldn't have. Kneeling down on one leg at the edge of the shot sector net and the track.
Those old farts are all the same, i.e. retired HS track coaches on a pension.
Yep, retired rtards who believe the rules don't apply to them.
Usatf and college officialdom is a pompous arses parade.
Sad.
That is why I always tell people at the local track just to stay where they are and I will go around them ...because 9 X out 10 they always step in the wrong direction... it clearly looks as if someone told him to get out of the way ( he looks over to the right) just before he made his mad dash. Happens all to often when running workouts on a crowded track. Never have seen it happen at a big meet.

Funny, I've been around tracks for many years and I can count on my hands times someone has been absolutely clobbered by an oncoming runner.
In both cases it was a college runner being in the wrong place and not watching. Once while on their phone.
If some runners who know the rules would actually give back and volunteer some of their time maybe four to six days a year each, you would not need to complain. It only takes a little giving back from each person.

Crap happens.
I don't race as much as I used to but you really have to show some appreciation to the officials that volunteer their time at meets.
If one of the runners had yelled out a bit louder and earlier- disaster averted. It's not like they didn't know that it wasn't going to happen.
The pacer was a bit aggressive but l'lI give him the benefit of the doubt.
Anyway I'm sure the official learned a lesson he won't ever forget. He should be back to help out if he still wants to volunteer again.

Sort of. He broke both his wrists, his legs, a couple of ribs, his back. But check it out. He's gonna get a huge settlement out of this. Like seven figures. He's getting out of the hospital this weekend and he's throwing a big party to celebrate. I'm thinking I'm gonna take that new chick from Logistics. I might be showing her my O face. Oh! Oh! Oh! you know what I'm talking about. Oh! Yeah. Right. See you guys there.

Those guys work for free and pay for their own food, gay bar, and airfare. They'll never be banned for an honest mistake. Even the official hit by the shot ai IAAF Portland Indoors is still at meets.
The man who was hit still does go to meets. He's a photographer.
