The guy was awesome.
Sorry to hear .
He and Wilkins lit up the field scene here in USA .
RIP
He was a wild man. 72 oly shot trials he wore a red Speedo and smoked a cigarette in Hayward infield after his throws.
Post athletics things went badly for him.
Steroids could not have prolonged his life. RIP
RIP. That SI cover shot of him is iconic if you grew up in that era,
Remember him well from the Superstars. Something like that is unimaginable today.
How did things go badly ? Just curious after reading the SI article I am not surprised.
Met him on a train in Sweden just before the '72 Olympics, I think he was heading to the USA team training camp in Oslo. He was loud and proud.
RIP.

On his wiki page, it lists him as needing assistance (cane, wheelchair) due to injuries sustained due to training. Most likely his back or joints just gave out. Heavy lifting takes its toll on a body for sure.
Here's a 2006 article from the Chicago Tribune

Thanks for that.
He was an icon. RIP.
Tribute video. I remember seeing him beat Billy "White Shoes" Johnson in a 60 yd dash. The man was freakishly fast despite his size.
RIP. Great fun-loving guy. Didn't take himself too seriously. Blazed trails for future pros as well.
He said he "just had a throwgasm" to an interviewer in the 80's...
On live TV...
He was a one and only.
Rip
I remember him well from my childhood, my dad had that SI, and of course the awesome Superstars. The players are too rich to do this today, but can you imagine getting athletes from all the sports together? Football, track, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacross...etc? See how these boys compete against each other.
RIP Brian Oldfield.

Yes, Oldfield was amazingly fast. It was scary to see back in the day.
Anyone remember that Z level flick he was in?
