I'm just curious how many road/track American records have been set during a race that the record setter did not win the race? My guess is most of them...

Winning is overrated.
current
mens outdoor on 800-2nd,5000-2nd marathon-4th steeple-2nd
bob Kennedy's AR was an 8th place performance ARs
Right off the top of my head, Tyson "The Creams" Gay 9.71 100m loses to Usain Bolt 9.58 WR and Shannon Rowbury 3:56 loses to Genzebe Dibaba 3:50.07 WR.
But there are not that many others. Where you get the idea it's "most of them" I have no idea
Gay AR 9.69 was a win
all the regular mens field event ARs were wins
Huddle.
Outdoors I can only think of Alan Webb's AR being the only win. Road Ryan Hall's half record was a win. Im sure theres more road wins that were ARs then track.

all standard field firsts
Didn't Teg get like 4th when he ran his 8:07 2 mile?

Well, so far there have been a lot of them listed so it seems I may be on to something.
Probably find even more that aren't the course record where they were set. Galen Rupp 10,000 is CR + 27.
None of my PRs are also wins except for one. You usually PR when you're busting your balls trying to catch up to better people, so it makes sense that the ARs are the same.
ok, that's logically, not probably. But a better chance for "most" of them to be losers

I though that too. Too bad that only seems to be an American mentality, eh? As an American we only try hard when someone else is beating us. As an American we only are motivated to do better when there is a carrot on a stick. What ever happened to trying harder just to better ourselves without the involvement of another person?

I'll one up. How about the indoor women's record set today? Has anyone else set an American record in finishing last?

Gay set AR of 9.71 first, it was a loss.

many. i'm thinkng because the race is fixed for the winner by either shortening the track or adjusting the timing system. an example would be the london 2012 olympics mens 800 meter where many finalists set PBs including 2 americans. also the mens 100 meter.
while only tangentially related, if i recall correctly, leroy burrell set an ncaa long jump record while getting second--the winning jump was wind-aided...
