Three things: 1) I'm a GP in a clinic with 6 other doctors. My practice is thriving. With a little help from my parents as a graduation present, I paid off my mortgage 2 years ago. I suspect that annual income is greater than what you make in 10 years.
2) I will admit one thing - the other GPs in the clinic have asked that I keep my girlfriend away from the clinic. She usually shows up a couple of hours before the end of my day and hangs out in the office or the waiting room. My colleagues are incredibly uptight - always complaining about her clothes, her language around the patients or other assorted behaviour. I don't tell them how to live their lives, they should butt out of mine. This is causing huge problems. I'm thinking about setting up a practice on my own. I will take a financial hit, but it will be worth it.
2) I actually went to Chucky Cheese with my girlfriend and her two sons last month. She doesn't have custody of the kids, so they're rarely around. The larger point is, if you opened your mind to what is out there you may find, as I diid, that hanging out with boring college types will always get old. I have a conventionally respectful job I do during the day, but I can't wait to get home and have some fun with my wild child. Life is too short to be defined by conventional rules set by others.
