Every week there seems to be some East African running low 59m or high 58m in the marathon.
Surely Bekele, Kipchoge, Kipsang et al could challenge the 58:23 mark?

Not necessarily.
The marathon has always been the weakest record on the books. So, the fact that they are breaking the marathon record means it's becoming closer to on par.
With that said, it should be close.

I guess there is not much money to be made in the half marathon. Otherwise, I don't see why they wouldn't give it a go. How could Kenenisa not beat Zersenay? How could Kipchoge not run a minute faster when he can jog a low 59?

Exactly what I think. Even Kamworor makes 59 look easy.
The marathon record is about 210% of the half marathon record which is pretty much on par with other twice the distance ratios
20,000 to 10,000 - 215%
10,000 to 5,000 - 208%
3,000 to 1500 - 214%
2 mile to mile - 214%
Obviously the 20,000 m on the track is not often competed so the record is probably somewhat soft. Using the road 20k record set during the half marathon record the ratio drops to 211%. Also, the ratios break down with shorter distances (the 800 to 400 ratio is 235%) so there is probably some wiggle room for both records, but not a significant amount.
Rupp will break 58 at Prague. Even he knows the record is soft.

Somehow I doubt it.
