Must-do? What happens if you don't do them, do they make you stay alive until you do?
The problem is that races fade away.
For example my favorite race of the year way back was the Maggie Valley Moonlight Race. Now its little more than a local event. Same with the Virginia 10 miler and others.
30 yrs ago i would have out these on a list. Now, not so much
Avenue of the Giants marathon: Awesome run through the redwoods of Northern California. A shame that participation has dwindled. Guaranteed to be cool and shaded.
Any National Masters Championship road race. Since this is a bucket list, it would seem to have older runners in mind. And if you are pretty good in your age group it is fun to suddenly be competitive and not minutes behind the sub-5:00/mile pace guys. Plus, if you can afford it, it's fun to point for races in different parts of the country.

For me, it was:
NYC Marathon (I grew up a block off of the course in Brooklyn early in my life and the late 70s races are among my earliest memories). Ran this one.
Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. Ran this one too, but the cherry blossoms bloomed early and I didn't get to experience them.
Hood to Coast. Gimmicky by virtue of it being a relay, but just think it would be beautiful and a cool experience.
Commander's Cup.
Black, indian and Latino.
